A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DESIGNATING
COMMISSIONER WIFREDO (WILLY) GORT AS COMMISSIONER EMERITUS
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI.
SPONSOR(S): Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Commissioner Manolo Reyes
WHEREAS, Wifredo Gort de los Llanos, best known as Willy Gort ("Commissioner
Gort"), was born in Havana, Cuba in 1940; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort and his family fled Cuba and arrived in the City of Miami
("City") in 1952 after Fulgencio Batista seized power; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort's family returned to Cuba in 1959, but only for a few
days as they quickly realized that another dictatorship was emerging, and they returned to the
City; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort is well known for his excellent community service and
his volunteer work, in what today are important not-for-profit agencies offering social services to
the elderly, the young, and the small business community, like Little Havana Nutrition and
Activity Center, the Youth Co -Op, Latin Chamber of Commerce (CAMACOL), and the Kiwanis
Club of Little Havana; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort was elected as a City of Miami Commissioner in the
City-wide election on November 9, 1993, and in 1996, Commissioner Gort was selected Vice -
Mayor and served as acting mayor three (3) months after the death of Mayor Stephen P. Clark,
and was named as Chairman of the Committee to amend the City Charter to create an
Executive Mayor and single member City Commission districts in Miami, a proposal that was
approved by the City's electorate; and
WHEREAS, in 1997, following the creation of single member districts, Commissioner
Gort was elected to a two (2) year term and subsequently elected to a four (4) year term in
1999; and
WHEREAS, in a Special Election in 2010, Commissioner Gort was again elected to
serve the constituents of City Commission District 1; and
WHEREAS, in 2011, Commissioner Gort retained the City Commission District 1 seat
with 68% of the vote and he was then re-elected for an additional term in 2015 and served until
November 2019; and
WHEREAS, it is proper and appropriate that Commissioner Gort be designated as
Commissioner Emeritus of the City;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:

Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby designates Commissioner Gort as
Commissioner Emeritus of the City.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.

If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
