File Number: 6838 City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-19-0474 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 11/21/2019 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF JANUARY AS "HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI ("CITY") TO ENCOURAGE GREATER AWARENESS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING WITHIN THE CITY AND TO SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, LOCAL AND STATE LEADERS, AND ORGANIZATIONS TO FURTHER THE FIGHT AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING. WHEREAS, human trafficking is defined as the transporting, soliciting, recruiting, harboring, providing, or obtaining of another for the purposes of forced labor, domestic servitude, or sexual exploitation using force, fraud, and/or coercion; and WHEREAS, human trafficking is essentially a form of modern-day slavery exercised by criminal enterprises through forced labor, debt bondage, servitude, and commercial sexual exploitation; and WHEREAS, human trafficking is a $150 billion a year industry globally, second to drug smuggling, with over 20 million victims around the world of which two million victims are potentially in the United States; and WHERAS, the State of Florida's ("Florida") Legislature recognizes the significant moral and economic harm of forced labor and human trafficking to both Florida and individuals across the globe and that ignoring this problem is detrimental not only to those enslaved, but also to society as a whole; and WHEREAS, Florida strives to lead the nation in awareness, training, services, and legislative efforts to combat human trafficking; and WHEREAS, a national hotline, (888) 373-7888, and a local hotline, (305) FIX -STOP or (305) 349-7867, have been established to report activities related to human trafficking; and WHEREAS, in furthering the efforts of Florida and local leaders in collaborating to fight against Human Trafficking, the City Commission hereby recognizes the month of January as "Human Trafficking Awareness Month" for purposes of helping victims and survivors of human trafficking in South Florida and to commend law enforcement, local governments, non-profit organizations that serve victims and families of human trafficking, and residents for their support and efforts in combating this modern-day slave trade and for remaining vigilant and cognizant of the issue in order to protect the residents and visitors of the City of Miami ("City"); NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby recognizes the month of January as "Human Trafficking Awareness Month" in the City to encourage greater awareness of human trafficking within the City and to support the efforts of law enforcement, local and Florida leaders, and organizations to further the fight against human trafficking. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'
