A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S),
URGING GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE
FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT THE ISSUES ADOPTED AS THE
LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY, FLORIDA DURING THE 2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION; DIRECTING
THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE
ELECTED OFFICIALS NAMED HEREIN.
SPONSOR(S): Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Commissioner Manolo Reyes
WHEREAS, Miami -Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the
United States, comprised of 392 schools, 345,000 students and over 40,000 employees; and
WHEREAS, The School Board of Miami -Dade County ("School Board") sets district
policy for the Miami -Dade County Public Schools and has identified its 2020 legislative priorities
and is requesting the support of the City of Miami ("City") regarding these priorities; and
WHEREAS, Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida's House and Senate leaders have an
opportunity to address the concerns of the School Board during the upcoming 2020 legislative
session; and
WHEREAS. the Miami City Commission finds it in the best interests of its citizens,
residents and school students to support the School Board's legislative priorities during the
upcoming 2020 legislative session;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Resolution.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Governor Ron DeSantis and the members
of the Florida Legislature to support the issues adopted as the legislative priorities for the
School Board, attached and incorporated as Exhibit "A," during the 2020 legislative session.
Section 3. The Miami City Commission hereby directs the City Clerk to transmit a copy
of this Resolution to Governor Ron DeSantis, Speaker of the House Jose R. Oliva, Senate
President Bill Galvano, the Members of the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'
' If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
