HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-19-0340City of Miami q Legislation Resolution: R-19-0340 File Number: 6441 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 9/12/2019 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO OBJECTION AND SUPPORTING THE CO -DESIGNATION BY THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE, PURSUANT TO CHAPTER 2019-169, LAWS OF FLORIDA, CO -DESIGNATING THAT PORTION OF NORTHWEST 37TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 2ND STREET TO NORTHWEST 11TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "FLORENCE HECHT LANE"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, DISTRICT SIX FOR SIGN INSTALLATION WITHIN THE NEWLY CO -DESIGNATED ROADWAY. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature during its 2019 session passed Chapter 2019-169, Laws of Florida, approving, inter alia, several road designations, including a co -designation for Florence Hecht; and WHEREAS, Florence Hecht was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 1, 1916 and passed away on August 24, 2012 at the age of 95; and WHEREAS, Florence Hecht and her late husband Isadore Hecht, owners of the Flagler Dog Track, now the Magic City Casino, were civic and philanthropic leaders in our community; and WHEREAS, in 1973, Florence Hecht helped establish the Jewish Museum of Florida; and WHEREAS, Florence Hecht and the Hecht family were and are integral supporters of the Mount Sinai Medical Center community; and WHEREAS, Florence Hecht, a University of Miami trustee since 1983, served on the Executive, Academic Affairs, Athletic Advisory, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Student Affairs, and University Advancement committees as well as visiting committees for the College of Arts and Sciences, Frost School of Music, and the Schools of Communication and Education; and WHEREAS, Florence Hecht's philanthropy resulted in the creation of the Hecht Residential College and support for the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Law at the University of Miami; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate for the City of Miami ("City") to commemorate the life of Florence Hecht for her contributions to the City and the Greater Miami area by supporting the co -designation by the Florida Legislature of that portion of Northwest 37th Avenue from Northwest 2nd Street to Northwest 11th Street, Miami, Florida as "Florence Hecht Lane"; City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 6441 (Revision:) Printed On: 9/25/2019 File ID: 6441 Enactment Number: R-19-0340 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission declares no objection and supports the co - designation by the Florida Legislature, pursuant to Chapter 2019-169, Laws of Florida, co - designating that portion of Northwest 37th Avenue from Northwest 2nd Street to Northwest 11 th Street, Miami, Florida as "Florence Hecht Lane". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six for sign installation within the newly co -designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'
