A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY TO RESPECTFULLY MAINTAIN DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. AS THE
SOLE NAME FOR CO -DESIGNATING NORTHEAST/NORTHWEST 62 STREET,
MIAMI, FLORIDA; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY
OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. ("Dr. King") was an American Baptist minister and
activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the American Civil Rights
movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968; and
WHEREAS, drawing from his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma
Gandhi, Dr. King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil
disobedience; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combatting racial
inequality through nonviolent resistance, organizing the Selma to Montgomery marches,
opposing poverty, and opposing the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, posthumously, Dr. King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
and the Congressional Gold Medal, and in 1986 President Ronald signed legislation enacting
the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday; and
WHEREAS, Northeast/Northwest 62nd Street, the principal artery of Liberty City, was the
epicenter of racial unrest in Miami during October 1968; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 41551 adopted on May 13, 1970, the City
Commission co -designated Northeast/Northwest 62nd Street as "Martin Luther King, Jr.
Boulevard" as a result of a grass roots movement to promote the physical improvement and
socio-economic development of the area; and
WHEREAS, the co -designation of Northeast/Northwest 62nd Street as Martin Luther
King, Jr. Boulevard has deep historical significance rooted in the American Civil Rights
movement, not only to the residents of the area, but to Miami -Dade County as a whole; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission believes it is in the best interest of the residents and
visitors of the City of Miami to maintain "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." as the sole name for co -
designating Northeast/Northwest 62nd Street, Miami, Florida;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby urges Miami -Dade County to respectfully
maintain "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." as the sole name for co -designating Northeast/Northwest
62nd Street, Miami, Florida.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Mayor of Miami -Dade County and the members of the Miami -Dade County Board of County
Commissioners.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'

1 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
