HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-19-0145City of Miami 1 i.RR cl Legislation alldl 1 l + Resolution: R-19-0145 File Number: 5680 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 4/11/2019 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO OBJECTION AND SUPPORTING THE CO -DESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI'S MUNICIPAL BOUNDARIES OF NORTHWEST 10TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 23RD STREET TO NORTHWEST 27TH STREET AS "BOBBY MADURO WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Wifredo (Willy) Gort WHEREAS, Roberto "Bobby" Maduro ("Bobby Maduro") was born in Havana, Cuba in 1916; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro helped the negotiate Cuban Winter League entry into Organized Baseball in 1947; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro helped construct and was a co-owner of Havana's Gran Stadium, the first million -dollar sports complex built in Latin America between 1946 and 1960; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was a co-founder of the Caribbean Series in 1948; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was co-owner of the Cienfuegos Elephants Baseball Team within the Cuban Winter League between 1949 and 1953; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was owner of the Havana Cubans in 1953; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro created Los Cubanitos (the Cuban Little Leagues) and established Baseball Academies between 1954 and 1960; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was the owner and founder of the Cuban Sugar Kings, which relocated to New Jersey as the Jersey City Jerseys and relocated to Florida as the Jacksonville Suns between 1954 and 1963; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was the General Manager of the Jacksonville Suns and the Latin American scout for the St. Louis Cardinals between 1964 and 1965; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was the Director of Inter -American Relations under some baseball commissioners between 1965 and 1978; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was the founder of the Inter -American Baseball League in 1979; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 5680 (Revision:) Printed On: 5/22/2019 File ID: 5680 and Enactment Number: R-19-0145 WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was inducted into the Cuban Hall of Fame in Exile in 1985; WHEREAS, in Bobby Maduro's honor, the Miami Stadium was renamed after him in 1987; and WHEREAS, Bobby Maduro was inducted into the inaugural class of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010; and WHEREAS, in Bobby Maduro's honor, the portion of Northwest 4th Street between Northwest 14th Avenue and Northwest 16th Avenue adjacent to Marlins Park was previously renamed "Bobby Maduro Drive"; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission would like to honor Bobby Maduro by codesignating that portion of Northwest 10th Avenue between Northwest 23rd Street and Northwest 27th Street, Miami, Florida as "Bobby Maduro Way"; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission declares no objection and supports the co - designation of that portion within the City of Miami's municipal boundaries of Northwest 10th Avenue from Northwest 23rd Street to Northwest 27th Street as "Bobby Maduro Way". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District One, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'
