A DISCUSSION REGARDING ULTRA.
Miami Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) on Ultra Music
Festival at Virginia Key
The Miami Downtown Neighbors Alliance ("DNA") engaged residents of Downtown Miami's Central
Business District ("CBD") for their feedback following the 2019 Ultra Music Festival ("UMF"), which was
held at Virginia Key on March 29-31. The main issues that were reported are:
Loud music and strobe lights until 2 am each event day — primarily emitted by UMF's main stage,
which was facing Brickell Key and the CBD. The loud music and light were particularly bothersome at
residential communities facing Virginia Key like One Miami and Epic, but noise complaints were
reported as far north as 900 Biscayne Boulevard.
• Late night noise in close proximity to UMF's Transportation Hub B near the American Airlines
Arena, which was the only hub located adjacent to a high-density residential community.
• Loud music from ferries traveling between Bayfront Park and Virginia Key.
As the City Commission weighs UMF's request to return to Virginia Key for their 2020 edition, the DNA
recommends considering the following measures to minimize disruption to downtown residential life
and allowing UMF and Miami downtown residents to co -exist:
1. Require UMF to direct all amplification devices away from residential communities — particularly
the Main Stage, and require the use of professional noise dampening curtains at the back and sides
of each such amplified noise source.
2. Require UMF to relocate Transportation Hub B to a location at least 500 feet away from the
nearest residential community, with Government Center as a possible location.

3. Require UMF to prohibit the playing of music on ferries contracted to transport UMF attendees
to and from Virginia Key when in range of 1,000 feet from Miami's shorelines.
We view these recommendations as absolutely necessary to protect the right of downtown residents to
a basic quality of life.
If these recommendations cannot be implemented effectively, the DNA graciously demands that the 2020
edition of UMF is relocated to an area outside of the City of Miami that is more suitable for events of this
scale and that will not disrupt residents' life.
Grateful for your consideration!
Yours truly,
