The Education Advisory Board was created by City Ordinance 13066 to: (1) communicate with the
administration of each school within the city, and with those schools attended by city residents,
regardless of the schools' location; (2) serve as liaison between the city and Miami -Dade County
Public Schools; (3) serve as liaison among the city's residents, neighborhood associations, local
businesses and the city on educational issues; (4) coordinate with the city and Miami -Dade Public
Schools regarding the use of schools and parks as community hubs; (5) develop joint -use agreements
where the city's parks and public schools can share resources to provide additional or expanded
programming to the community; (6) coordinate activities of the city with those activities of the local
public schools, colleges and universities to promote educational opportunities for citizens and
residents of the city; (7) develop recommendations regarding programs which may be created to
enhance educational opportunities in the city; (8) develop proposed actions, including proposed
legislation at the state, county, and federal levels, supports educational programs in the city; (9)
identify and advise the city on ways to attract state and federal programs and grants to support
schools within the city; and (10) contact businesses within the city and businesses outside the city,
but who do business with the city, to provide mentors, professional skills, materials, financial or
educational support for schools.
Eleven (11) appointments are required at this time:
• Mayor Francis Suarez has one (1) nomination for a seat currently held by:
1. Marta Zayas, incumbent, whose term expired on November 15, 2017.1° 2
• Chair Keon Hardemon has one (1) nomination for a seat currently held by:
1. Christopher Norwood, incumbent, whose term expires on April 10, 2018.
• Commissioner Wifredo (Willy) Gort has one (1) nomination for a seat currently held by:
1. Michelle Fernandez, incumbent, whose term expires on April 10, 2018.
• Commissioner Joe Carollo has one (1) nomination for a seat currently:3
1. Vacant. (Seat previously held by Evelio Torres)

1. Jose Vicente, incumbent, whose term expired on September 12, 2017, has served as a
member since July 9, 2009, and will require a term waiver by a unanimous (5/5) vote of
the Commission.
2. Iraida Mendez-Cartaya, incumbent, whose term expired on September 12, 2017, has
served as a member since July 9, 2009, and will require a term waiver by a unanimous
(5/5) vote of the Commission.'
3. George Cabrera, incumbent, whose term expired on October 10, 2017.8
