Background of Item: In response to a grant application that was submitted by the City of Miami to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services requesting funding for 15 new officers, the U. S. Department of Justice approved the request. The amount of federal funds awarded will support the salaries and fringe benefits of the 15 new officers. A local cash match of $2,229,141 is required for this award, bringing the total program funding for a three-year period to $4,324,141. The City must retain the funded positions for at least one year after the grant ends, per the condition of the award. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") submitted a grant application to the United States Department of Justice/Office of Community Oriented Policing Services ("COPS") to receive a grant for fifteen (15) new law enforcement officers; and WHEREAS, the City received notification that the application was approved for the fifteen (15) new law enforcement officers and awarded a grant in an amount not to exceed $1,875,000.00 in federal funds for a three (3) year grant period to support the salaries and fringe benefits of said officers; and WHEREAS, the local cash match required for this award is $2,449,141.00; and WHEREAS, as a condition of the award, the City must retain the funded positions for at least one (1) year after the grant ends; and WHEREAS, it would be appropriate for the City Manager to accept said grant and to establish a special revenue fund for the appropriation of said award; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The following new Special Revenue Project is established and resources are appropriated as described below: FUND TITLE: 2017 COPS Hiring Program RESOURCES: U. S. The City Manager is authorized' to accept said grant award and to execute the necessary documents, in substantially the attached form, to implement the administration of said grant. Section 4. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
