HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-17-0501City of Miami Legislation Resolution R-17-0501 File Number: 3184 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 10/26/2017 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TASK FORCE TO HOLD THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE HARD ROCK STADIUM, LOCATED IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN JANUARY 2021, 2023, OR 2024; FURTHER SUPPORTING THE CITY OF MIAMI'S ("CITY") HOSTING AND PARTICIPATING IN RELATED EVENTS; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES OF ANY POTENTIAL WAIVER OF CITY FEES FOR SERVICES RELATED TO THE FIRE -RESCUE DEPARTMENT, THE MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND ANY OTHER APPLICABLE FEES FOR THE USE OF BAYFRONT PARK, MARLINS PARK, OR ANY OTHER VENUES. WHEREAS, the College Football Playoff ("CFP") is a postseason tournament in American college football for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision ("FBS"); and WHEREAS, the CFP National Championship Game ("Game") venue is selected based on competitive bids submitted by cities across the country, similar to the Super Bowl or NCAA Final Four; and WHEREAS, the South Florida College Football Championship Task Force ("Task Force") is leading the effort to submit bids for the 2021, 2023, and 2024 Games and the selected destination would be required to host a series of ancillary events for the CFP around the Game; and WHEREAS, the Task Force has identified the City of Miami ("City") as a host destination for events and venues related to the Game, including, but not limited to the following: - Media Day: A free event for fans to watch their favorite players, listen to interviews, and experience more than 1,000 media members preview the Game; and - Extra Yard for Teachers 5k: A family friendly 3.1 mile race, which generates proceeds that benefit Extra Yard for Teachers, the CFP's primary philanthropic initiative that honors, celebrates, inspires, and empowers teachers; and WHEREAS, the Task Force has requested support from the City; and WHEREAS, the City has historically been supportive of such events such as the Super Bowl and WrestleMania; and WHEREAS, the Task Force is invited to meet with the Mayor, Commission members, and the City Manager to discuss how the City can help secure the bid to host the Game; and WHEREAS, the City is committed to working with the Task Force as needed in its efforts to host the Game; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 3184 (Revision:) Printed On: 2/13/2018 File ID: 3184 Enactment Number: R-17-0501 WHEREAS, nationally recognized sporting events such as this Game bring tens of thousands of visitors to the City resulting in both direct and indirect positive economic impact for local businesses; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby supports the efforts of the Task Force to hold the Game at the Hard Rock Stadium, located in Miami -Dade County, Florida, in January 2021, 2023, or 2024, and further supports the City's hosting and participating in related events. Section 3. The City Commission further directs the City Manager to explore the possibilities of any potential waiver of City fees for services related to the Fire -Rescue Department, the Miami Police Department, and other applicable fees for the use of Bayfront Park, Marlins Park, and other venues. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'
