A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AGREEING TO BE A
NOMINAL SPONSOR OF FLORIDA SOLAR UNITED NEIGHBORHOODS ("FL
SUN"); AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ALLOW FL SUN TO USE THE
CITY OF MIAMI'S LOGO ON ITS SPONSORSHIP PAGE.
WHEREAS, on November 8, 2016, voters in the State of Florida ("State") voted against
Amendment 1, which would have allowed there to be restrictions on rooftop solar panel
expansion for property owners in the State; and
WHEREAS, solar energy allows citizens to move energy consumption to a more
environmentally friendly source and provides a self-sustaining, pollution free form of energy; and
WHEREAS, it is in the interests of the residents of the City of Miami ("City") to use and
benefit from renewable energy such as solar power; and
WHEREAS, the City has demonstrated its commitment to promoting the use and
benefits of solar energy by adopting Ordinance No. 13658 on February 9, 2017, which amended
the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended "(City Code"), to waive all City Building
Permit Fees related to the installation of solar panels for Residential and Commercial
Properties; and
WHEREAS, the City is a charter member of the Green Corridor interlocal coalition,
devoted to providing renewable energy to residents of Miami -Dade County ("County"); and
WHEREAS, the Green Corridor Board has provided a grant to Florida Solar United
Neighborhoods ("FL SUN") to create solar buying co-operatives for residents of the County,
including the City; and
WHEREAS, FL SUN expands access to solar power by educating Floridians about the
benefits of distributed solar energy, helping them organize group solar installations, and
strengthening the State's solar policies and its community of solar supporters; and
WHEREAS, FL SUN is one (1) of five (5) regional programs run by the not for profit
organization Community Power Network ("CPN"); and
WHEREAS, existing sponsors for the FL SUN co-operatives include the League of
Women Voters of Florida, League of Women Voters of Miami -Dade, Green Corridor Property
Assessment Clean Energy ("PACE") District, Tropical Audubon Society, Rise Up Florida, CLEO
Institute, Citizens Climate Lobby, Sustainable Miami, Resilient Miami, Urban Impact Lab,
Women's March Miami, Unitarian Universalists Congregation of Miami, Earth Ethics Institute,
and Miami -Dade College; and
WHEREAS, becoming a nominal sponsor of FL SUN co-operatives does not require the
City to expend funds;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission agrees to be a nominal sponsor of FL SUN.
Section 3. The City Manager is authorized' to review, approve and request the removal
of the use of the City's logo by FL SUN on its sponsorship page.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.2

' The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by
the City Attorney, including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and City Code
provisions.
2 If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
