HomeMy WebLinkAboutBack-Up DocumentI S. i I.j Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami Summer Leadership Institute Program Proposal .. .m City of Miami Miami Riverside Center (MRC) April 28, 2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PROJECT TITLE: Summer Leadership Institute NEED: Even though unemployment in South Florida is at its lowest point (4.9 percent) since 2007, many employers find it challenging to maintain employees due to the competitiveness of today's market. As a result, local companies are focusing on strategies to retain top talent. In alignment with the One Community One Goal (OCOG) Initiative, our Summer Leadership Institute program provides an educational platform for increasing paid internships while developing skilled workforce and contributing to the retention of talent in the community. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As part of our Career Pathways initiative, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami (BBBSM) will provide a 6 -week Summer Leadership Institute program for up to 20 mentees ("Littles") currently matched with their workplace mentors ("Bigs") at the City of Miami Miami Riverside Center (MRC). Little Interns will receive a summer stipend totaling $1,811 (based on the current minimum wage salary of $8.05/hr). They will work an 8 -hour day with a 30 -minute lunch break for which they will receive a daily voucher (valued at $10). Each week, we will engage the Little Interns in Career Explorations focused on different themes such as Personal Growth, Building Resiliency, Leadership Development, Career Awareness, Academic Success, and Community Involvement. Activities will be held once a week at the Carnival Center of Excellence to help the Little Interns develop their leadership skills. Little Interns will also embark in an enrichment field trip which will provide them with College Readiness experiences. To assess their progress, BBBSM will administer a pre/posttest as well as the Myers -Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to help Little Interns identify their strengths in the workplace. All of the Little Interns' experiences during the Summer Leadership Institute will be chronicled in a journal and reviewed with their mentor on a weekly basis. In addition, a closing ceremony will be held to celebrate the achievements of the Little Interns and showcase their service -learning project. PROJECT GOAL: To help at -risk youth break the cycle of poverty and violence by helping them to explore career pathways. TARGET POPULATION: 20 at -risk youth in the School to Work program at City of Miami MRC. TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET: $75,000 ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND: As the premier mentoring organization in South Florida, BBBSM seeks to strengthen, develop, and secure our future leaders by matching the rising stars in our community with committed mentors who provide their time and talents to guiding them towards becoming productive citizens. By facilitating long-term mentoring relationships, our objective is to positively impact at -risk youth to improve their overall academic performance and develop positive social relationships.
