EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
PROJECT TITLE: Summer Leadership Institute
NEED: Even though unemployment in South Florida is at its lowest point (4.9 percent) since
2007, many employers find it challenging to maintain employees due to the competitiveness of
today's market. As a result, local companies are focusing on strategies to retain top talent. In
alignment with the One Community One Goal (OCOG) Initiative, our Summer Leadership
Institute program provides an educational platform for increasing paid internships while
developing skilled workforce and contributing to the retention of talent in the community.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As part of our Career Pathways initiative, Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Miami (BBBSM) will provide a 6 -week Summer Leadership Institute program for up to 20
mentees ("Littles") currently matched with their workplace mentors ("Bigs") at the City of
Miami Miami Riverside Center (MRC). Little Interns will receive a summer stipend totaling
$1,811 (based on the current minimum wage salary of $8.05/hr). They will work an 8 -hour day
with a 30 -minute lunch break for which they will receive a daily voucher (valued at $10). Each
week, we will engage the Little Interns in Career Explorations focused on different themes such
as Personal Growth, Building Resiliency, Leadership Development, Career Awareness, Academic
Success, and Community Involvement. Activities will be held once a week at the Carnival
Center of Excellence to help the Little Interns develop their leadership skills. Little Interns will
also embark in an enrichment field trip which will provide them with College Readiness
experiences. To assess their progress, BBBSM will administer a pre/posttest as well as the
Myers -Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to help Little Interns identify their strengths in the
workplace. All of the Little Interns' experiences during the Summer Leadership Institute will be
chronicled in a journal and reviewed with their mentor on a weekly basis. In addition, a closing
ceremony will be held to celebrate the achievements of the Little Interns and showcase their
service -learning project.
PROJECT GOAL: To help at -risk youth break the cycle of poverty and violence by helping them
to explore career pathways.
TARGET POPULATION: 20 at -risk youth in the School to Work program at City of Miami MRC.
TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET: $75,000
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND: As the premier mentoring organization in South Florida,
BBBSM seeks to strengthen, develop, and secure our future leaders by matching the rising stars
in our community with committed mentors who provide their time and talents to guiding them
towards becoming productive citizens. By facilitating long-term mentoring relationships, our
objective is to positively impact at -risk youth to improve their overall academic performance
and develop positive social relationships. BBBSM continues to impact the greater Miami
community by expanding our School to Work program to positively influence the behavior of
impressionable young children — our city's rising stars — for whom the sky is still the limit.
