SUMMER YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY, THE CHILDREN'S TRUST, THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND
THE FOUNDATION FOR NEW EDUCATION INITIATIVES THAT CONNECTS YOUTH TO
SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO REPORT ITS FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE CITY

A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF COMBINING THE CITY OF
MIAMI'S SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT & FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT
PROGRAM WITH THE SUMMER YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, A
PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, THE CHILDREN'S TRUST, THE
SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND THE FOUNDATION FOR NEW
EDUCATION INITIATIVES THAT CONNECTS YOUTH TO SUMMER INTERNSHIP
OPPORTUNITIES; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO
REPORT ITS FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE CITY COMMISSION
WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAYS.
WHEREAS, this past summer, Miami -Dade County, The Children's Trust, The School
Board of Miami -Dade County, Florida ("M-DCPS") and the Foundation of New Education
Initiatives, Inc. ("Foundation"), a direct support organization providing financial support to M-
DCPS, partnered together to provide a countywide Summer Youth Internship Program
("Program"); and
WHEREAS, M-DCPS and the Foundation operate the Program and provide in-kind
Program support; and
WHEREAS, Program participants range between the ages of 15 and 18, with an
emphasis on at -risk youth, with ten percent (10%) of participants being youth with disabilities;
and
WHEREAS, the Program this past summer placed 1,457 participants who were hired by
717 Miami -Dade County organizations, of which 119 of those placements were privately funded;
and
WHEREAS, Program participants worked an average of 30 hours per week and received
a stipend of $1,208.00, assistance with transportation, a bank account, and were covered by
liability insurance; and
WHEREAS, those participants that completed the Program received either high school
credit or college credit through dual enrollment; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") similarly runs a Summer Youth Employment &
Financial Empowerment Program, which provides low/moderate income youth with summer
work experience, access to financial education and appropriate financial services in order to
increase their access to the financial tools and education that are fundamental to economic
prosperity and success; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission desires for the City Administration to study the
feasibility of combing the City's Summer Youth Employment & Financial Empowerment Program
with the Summer Youth Internship Program;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Administration is directed to study the feasibility of combing the
City's Summer Youth Employment & Financial Empowerment Program with the Summer Youth
Internship Program.
Section 3. The City Administration is further directed to report its findings and
recommendations to the City Commission no later sixty (60) days from the effective date of this
Resolution.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and
signature of the Mayor.'

' If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
