WHEREAS, at the age of twenty four (24), Jose Fernandez was a Cuban American Professional baseball player and superstar pitcher for the Miami Marlins; and WHEREAS, in his three (3) year span as a major league pitcher, Jose Fernandez has been recognized for his efforts on the field, including two (2) All-Star Selections in the years 2013 and 2016 and being selected as the National League Rookie of the year in 2013; and WHEREAS, during his career, Jose Fernandez averaged 12.5 strikeouts per nine (9) innings; the fifth highest single -season strikeout rate by a pitcher in Major League Baseball history; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez played his entire career for the Miami Marlins until his untimely death on September 25, 2016; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez was deemed a hero by his mother, who he saved from drowning when she fell overboard from the speed boat they used to defect during their voyage to the United States and a hero to the Cuban community for his philanthropic endeavors and success as a Major League pitcher; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez worked in the community as an advocate to raise awareness to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Osteogenesis Imperfecta; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez community efforts also included work with Live Like Bella and the Marlins Ayudan; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez's life story of flight leading to freedom and sacrifice leading to success, has become a beacon of hope and a signal of inspiration for a number of residents within the city of Miami; and WHEREAS, in light of his contributions to the City of Miami and the Miami Marlins, we wish to honor his legacy by co -designating a portion of Northwest 1711 Avenue from Northwest North River Drive to U.S. 1 as "Jose Fernandez Ave and WHEREAS, because that portion of Northwest 17th Avenue is a county road, not subject to change within the powers of City of Miami's jurisdiction, we thereby urge the Miami -Dade County Commission to co -designate a portion of Northwest 17th Avenue from Northwest North River Drive to U.S. 1 as "Jose Fernandez Avenue"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Miami -Dade County to co - designate a portion of Northwest 17th Avenue from Northwest North River Drive to U.S. 1 as "Jose Fernandez Avenue". Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, Miami - Dade County Public Works, and the United States Postal Service. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
