City of Miami IIS°°1 il°4I° *01\ °° °° Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-16-0486 File Number: 1143 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date:10/13/2016 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SINCEREST CONDOLENCES ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF MIAMI AND ITS CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY, AND FRIENDS OF JOSE FERNANDEZ, AND TO THE MIAMI MARLINS ORGANIZATION UPON HIS UNTIMELY DEATH. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") grieves the untimely death of Jose Fernandez, the Cuban American professional baseball player and superstar pitcher for the Miami Marlins; and WHEREAS, in his three (3) year span as a major league pitcher, Jose Fernandez has been recognized for his efforts on the field, including two (2) All-Star selections in the years 2013 and 2016 and being selected as the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez was deemed a hero by his mother, who he saved from drowning when she fell overboard from the speed boat they used to defect during their voyage to the United States and to the Cuban community for his philanthropic endeavors and success as a Major League pitcher; and WHEREAS, Jose Fernandez's humanitarian efforts had a major impact on the baseball community, working with charitable organizations like Marlins Ayudan and Live Like Bella while raising awareness to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Osteogenesis Imperfecta; and WHEREAS, the City pauses in its deliberations to recognize Jose Fernandez's life efforts and to share our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to his family, friends and the Miami Marlins Organization; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The authorities of the City of Miami, in the State of Florida, on behalf of our citizens, pause in our official deliberations to honor and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends, and to record for posterity this fitting tribute to Jose Fernandez (1992- 2016). Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.' I If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
