HomeMy WebLinkAboutLegislationFile Number: 16-00695 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.mlamigov.com Final Action Date: A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S), DESIGNATING THE AREA DESCRIBED IN EXHIBIT "A", ATTACHED AND INCORPORATED, AS "LITTLE HAITI" IN RECOGNITION OF THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL IMPORTANCE OF THE AREA TO THE CITY OF MIAMI AND MIAMI-DADE COUNTY ASA WHOLE. . WHEREAS, the area in the Northeast portion of the City of Miami ("City), described in Exhibit "A", attached and incorporated, is the cultural heart for the Haitian Community; and WHEREAS, the Haitian Diaspora and its community leaders have been vital to our City's growth and in effectuating change between the United States and Haiti; and WHEREAS, the predominantly Haitian community has enriched Miami -Dade County's multi-ethnic character as a whole; and WHEREAS, the Little Haiti Cultural Complex has brought new dimension to the area introducing Little Haiti's cultural identity as a fixture in our community; and WHEREAS, Little Havana has been recognized for its cultural heritage and importance to the community; and WHEREAS, other historic areas within the city have been identified for their importance to their respective communities; and WHEREAS, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau ("GMCVB") recognizes the Little Haiti community as a culturally vibrant community that has enriched Miami's multi-ethnic character; and WHEREAS, the GMCVB globally markets the Little Haiti community as a historic neighborhood to visit when in Miami; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission wishes to designate the area described in Exhibit "A", attached and incorporated, as Little Haiti, in recognition of the historical and cultural importance of the area; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2, The City Commission hereby designates the area described in Exhibit "A", attached and incorporated, as Little Haiti, in recognition of the historical and cultural importance of the area. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1} APP OVER AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: VI TORIA ENDEZ CITY ATTORNEY ---- Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
