WHEREAS, on April 16, 2016, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Ecuador; and WHEREAS, on April 20, 2016, a second earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Ecuador; and WHEREAS, as a result of the earthquakes over 500 people are confirmed dead, over 100 people are still missing, and over 7,000 people are injured; and WHEREAS, over 25,000 people remain in shelters due to the catastrophic destruction to buildings and infrastructure caused by the earthquakes making it difficult to provide aid and support to affected regions; and WHEREAS, international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the United States Agency for International Development have deployed relief teams to provide aid, support, and supplies to the people of Ecuador; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The members of the Miami City Commission pledge their solidarity with the people of Ecuador suffering the effects of two (2) earthquakes. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1) D AS TO FORM AND.
