HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-16-0231Vop City of Miami F .. 19611F A111 *'Ir Legislation i 0 R �O Resolution: R-16-0231 File Number: 16-00566 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 5/12/2016 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO CONDUCTA FEASIBILITY STUDY EXAMINING THE VIABILITY OF INSTALLING, MAINTAINING, AND OPERATING SOLAR ROADS THAT UTILIZE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGY TO PRODUCE RENEWABLE AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY; FURTHER DIRECTING THAT THE CITY ADMINISTRATION SUBMIT SAID STUDY TO THE CITY COMMISSION NO LATER THAN THREE (3) MONTHS FROM THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS RESOLUTION. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is committed to finding innovative solutions to produce clean and renewable energy in response to environmental sustainability issues; and WHEREAS, the City maintains its rights under the franchise agreement with Florida Power & Light Company to use renewable energy sources to generate electric capacity and/or energy for use in its facilities; and WHEREAS, numerous companies now offer technology that allows for a photovoltaic surface to be affixed to roadways which may be driven over in order to generate electricity when the surface is exposed to the sun ("Solar Road Technology"); and WHEREAS, Solar Road Technology has the capability of converting miles of roadway that contribute to the urban heat island effect into a potential source of green energy; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to examine the viability of installing, maintaining, and operating Solar Road Technology and directs the City Administration to develop and conduct a study for such system; and WHEREAS, the City Administration's study shall be reported and disseminated by means of an analysis report to be submitted to the City Commission no later than three (3) months from the effective date of this Resolution; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission directs the City Administration to conduct a feasibility study examining the viability of installing, maintaining, and operating solar roads that utilize new developments in photovoltaic technology to produce renewable and sustainable energy. Section 3. Enactment Number: R-16-0231 Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1 } Footnotes: {1} This Resolution shall become effective as specified herein unless vetoed by the Mayor within ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission or upon the effective date stated herein, whichever is later.
