Thank you Gracel In order to place the designation on file, I need a formal letter on your organization's
letterhead stating that you are designating Mr. Bush as your board representative. If you all do not have
letterhead, a formal email will suffice. Please include your organization's information in the email, as this will
be used as supporting documentation for the City Commission agenda item. Should you have any questions, or

Gregory Bush is the Director of the Institute for Public History at the University ofY
Miami and Associate Professor of History. Born and raised in Essex Fells New Jers 3 ` rn

Bush joined the faculty of the University in 1983 after completing his Ph.D. Degree i , CD
American History from Columbia University. Prior to that he received his M.A. degree
from George Washington University and his B.A. from Colgate University.
Professor Bush is the author of Lord of Attention: Gerald Stanley Lee and the Crowd
Metaphor in Industrializing America (1991, University of Massachusetts Press) and co-
author with Arva Moore Parks of Miami: The American Crossroads (1997, Prentice
Hall). 25,000 copies of this book were donated to the Miami -Dade Public Schools (along
with a Teacher's Guide) to be used in social science and American History courses. It
won the Tebeau Prize in 1997 for best book in Florida History from the Florida Historical
Society.
Bush is also one of the founders of the Florida Moving Image Archive, the former editor
of Film and History, and has been involved in assisting, reviewing, and completing
numerous documentary projects, including Patriotic Parades: Wartime Miami, 1898-
1945 (1984) as well as a documentary about Virginia Key Beach.
Concerned about civic involvement and the loss of public space along Miami's
waterfront Bush helped create the Urban Environment League in 1996 and subsequently
served as its President from 1998-2002. He is now Vice President. (see www.uel.orf;) As
President of the UEL, he helped initiate creation of a Civil Rights Park on Virginia Key
Beach in 1999 and played a leading role in other major waterfront issues including saving
the Miami Circle and preserving open space in Bicentennial Park on the waterfront. He
wrote the enabling legislation for the city's Parks Advisory Board and served as its first
chair from 2000-2002. He also wrote the enabling legislation and served as Vice Chair of
the Bicentennial Park/Waterfront renewal Committee of the City of Miami.
The National Park Service contracted with Bush to write the historical component of a
feasibility study for Virginia Key Beach Park which he completed in 2006. Bush was
also involved in initiating the Florida Community Studies Consortium with local
history/social science and science teachers, including setting up a civil rights archive with
teachers at Turner Tech High School. He has completed numerous oral history interviews
across Miami -Dade County and is preparing several volumes for publication.
Finally, Bush has initiated a project called Nature Links for Lifelong Learning, aimed at
helping young adults with middle range intellectual disabilities. See www.natureliDks.net.
Nature Links is now a 501 c3 organization with three programs addressing the largely
overlooked needs of the 19 to 30 year olds. It is located at Virginia Key Beach Park, the
Frost Science Museum (in affiliation with the City of Miami) and at JRE Lee School in
South Miami (with Miami Dade County Public Schools). Nature Links seeks to empower
young adults through T -Movie instruction focused on culinary skills, organic gardens,
habitat restoration, cultural expression, other educational/cultural elements, job readiness,
and independent life skills.
Bush's book White Sand/Black Beach: Civil Rights, Public Space and Miami's Virginia
Key is forthcoming in 2016 from the University of Florida Press.
