WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami ("BBBS Miami") has been matching at -risk youth with caring and committed mentors who "invest their perspective and time to awaken each child to new possibilities" for over fifty (50) years; and WHEREAS, BBBS Miami is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America ("BBBS"), which has over one hundred (100) years of experience matching youth with mentors; and WHEREAS, the BBBS vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all; and WHEREAS, the BBBS mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact; and WHEREAS, the goal of BBBS mentoring is to help children become more confident, competent and caring, which research has demonstrated reduces drug and alcohol use, decreases violence, and enhances school attendance, performance, and relationships with parents and peers; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has consistently supported BBBS Miami through the Mayor's Mentoring Initiative, and programs such as the Office of the Mayor's school-based mentoring program adopted by the City Commission, pursuant to Resolution No. 06-354, on June 8, 2006, that encourage City employees to become BBBS Miami volunteers to profoundly impact both deserving children and oneself; and WHEREAS, the City's Administrative Policy 2-01 permits a City employee up to one (1) hour per week, with an additional two (2) hours of travel time, to mentor a BBBS Miami mentee at the mentee's school while on the City's payroll; and WHEREAS, the City's support of BBBS Miami will strengthen efforts to cultivate a strong youth culture in the City; and WHEREAS, the City's priority of reducing youth violence and crime are furthered by its support of employees volunteering for the BBBS Miami program as they will be contributing to the health, safety, and welfare of the City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: City of Miand Page 1 of 2 File Id. 16-00429 (Version: 1) Printed On: 5/1/2018 File Number: 16-00429 Enactment Number: R-16-01 J 7 Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Ordinance are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City of Miami hereby expresses its support for the BBBS Miami program and encourages City employees to participate in said program as mentors. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1 } Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten (10) calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
