An investigation was conducted to determine whether Barth Networks d/b/a WeatherBug, located at 12410
Milestone Center Drive, Suite 300, Germantown, MD 20876, is the sole source manufacturer and provider of
WeatherBug products and related equipment, for the Miami Fire -Rescue Department (Fire).
On January 11, 2007, the City Commission approved the sole source purchase of twenty-two (22) weather
station packages, six (6) camera systems, one (1) license for Streamer RT software and related equipment, via
Resolution 07-0027 for Fire from WeatherBug.
Fire is now seeking to replace five (5) camera systems that are currently non-functional and obsolete to
continue providing data for Fire's WeatherBug System for early warning of severe weather.
The unique features of the WeatherBug System are, but are not limited to: (1) critical lightening detection, and
(2) data and video feeds to the Streamer RT software, which provides valuable information that Fire can use in
order to be proactive when lightning strikes and/or other weather created accidents and disasters.
WeatherBug, is the sole source manufacturer and sole source distributor of the patented WeatherBug system of
data collection and videos feeds, and its products are registered trademarks of WeatherBug.
Accordingly, pursuant to Section 18-92 (a) (1) of the Code of the City of Miami, it is recommended that the
requirements for competitive sealed bidding be waived, and these findings be approved: WeatherBug, located at
12410 Milestone Center Drive, Suite 300, Germantown, MD 20876, is the sole source manufacturer and
distributor of the WeatherBug, and approving the purchase of five (5) camera systems from WeatherBug for the
Department of Fire -Rescue, for a purchase amount of $46,250; allocating funds from the Fire -Rescue Urban
Area Security initiative Grant, Account Code No. 11100.189000.664000.0000.00000; subject to the availability
of funds and budgetary approval at the time of need.
