Dear City of Miami Commissioners,
I urge you to not allow the destruction of the Northeast Miami Women's Club.
I am the grand -niece of Victor Hugo Nellenbogen, who designed this beautiful and
architecturally significant building, as well as the Pueblo Hotel conversion to Kellogg Hospital
in Miami Springs, and numerous landmark Art Deco buildings on Miami Beach. These include
the Alamac Hotel, Savoy Plaza, the Bowman Hotel, the Sterling Building on Lincoln Road,
and many period residences.
I had the pleasure of meeting my grand uncle as a child. While those memories are dim,
we all have the pleasure of seeing his architectural legacy as it lives on in Miami and Miami
Beach. While a single structure — even a modest one such as this — may not in itself
represent a material erosion of Miami's rich architectural heritage, it is the composite of his
and others' architectural legacies that make up the character of the City. While I don't yet
know to what alternative use this property will be put, in a world of seemingly infinite drab
and architecturally unremarkable buildings, it seems a shame that this gem cannot be
spared.
It has been said that 'architecture is music set in stone'. I urge you to save the
Northeast Miami Women's Club. In doing so you will be preserving a veritable brick in the
wall of Miami's rich "golden age." Individual bricks such as these create the favorable image
of the City, and saving it would speak to attending to the details that will sustain that image.
Please do so.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Kathleen Tyler Conklin.
