The Centel!cc aqueducts in Nazca, Peru, in the dusty and desert land of Ica, on the
southern coast of Peru, was the cradle of the Nazca culture, whose inhabitants came to
build, more than a 1,000 years ago, miles of underground aqueducts, The site is now
threatened by illegal mining
Illegal mining fuels new
conflicts in Peru,

Mr MAR orlro.R hRTrc
Illegal mining is giving
rise to a new type of social
conflict in Pent' pitting
rural communities against
networks operating outside
the law, while threatening
water sources, ecosystems.
It's also threatening one
of the world's most impor-
tant ardsaeological treasur-
es — the Nazca tines,
which are are among the
world's most important
collections of geoglyphs
that include figures of
animals, plants and geo-
metric shapes created
about 2,000 years ago,.
This wanting appears in
a social conflicts report by
Peru's Ombudsman's Of-
fice, which identified six
active conflicts related to
illegal mining in different
regions of the country.
The office warned,
though, that the scale of
the problem could be
greaterrb cause many cases
are included in offi-
cial records.
Unlike traditional mining
disputes, which historically
pitted communities against
formal mining companies,
the new conflicts involve
associations of illegal min-
ers, mineral processing
plant operators, trans-
porters and other networks
linked to illicit activities,
making government in-
tervention more difficult,
Rumbo Minero reported.
According to the Om-
budsman's Office, because
these organizations operate
outside the law, there is
often no formal repre-
sentative with whom au-
thorities can negotiate or
demand accountability.
That situation limits
institutional dialogue
mechanisms and increases
the risk of violence, partic-

ularly because of the al-
leged involvement of crimi-
nal organizations, Vision
htfointa reported.
The phenomenon has
already spread nationwide.
In Huanta, in the Ayacucho
region, fainters and social
organizations are demand-
ing an end to small-scale
minting activities to protect
the headwaters and the
Razuhuillca lagoon system,
a source of drinking water
and agricultural production,
according to the Ombuds-
man's report.
In Arequipa, communi-
ties say illegal mining is
affecting their land and
water resources.
In the province of Pataz,
in the La Libertad region,
security problems and
pollution linked to illegal
mineral extraction persist
Farther north, in the

HELP VICTIMS OF THE
VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKES
United Way Miami and Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald have activated
Operation Helping Hands to support those affected by the devastating
earthquakes in Venezuela. The earthquakes have caused loss of life and
widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure and essential
services, leaving thousands in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
Operation Helping Hands is ajoint emergency response and disaster
relief fund established in 1998 by United Way Miami and Miami Herald/el
Nuevo Herald following Hurricanes Mitch and Georges, providing a
trusted way for South Floridians to help communities in crisis.
100%of funds raised through Operation Helping Hands will be used to
purchase relief supplies and services through nonprofit organizations
actively providing assistance on the ground.
In addition, United Way Miami and Miami -Dade County are partnering
with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), which will serve as the
designated organization responsible for collecting essential goods for
those impacted by the earthquakes.
To support relief and recovery efforts, please donate to
Operation Helping Hands to help meet the immediate and
long-term needs of those affected by this tragedy.

government intervention to
halt the expansion of these
operations, Revelaabn
Perri reported.
The report also includes
protests by informal miners
demanding an extension of
the Comprehensive Mining
Formalisation Registry,
known as REINFO, and a
new law governing small-
scale and artisan] mining.
In addition, the Ombuds-
an's Office wamed that
some conflicts remain
outside official records,
including the case of the
Yohta mineral processing
plant in the Cusco region,
where local residents re-
ported environmental con-
tamination and threats.
The expansion of illegal
mining is also threatening
Pem's cultural heritage.
The Nazca Lines, situat-
ed in the Ica Desert and
designated a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in
1994. German mathemat-
ician
Maria Reiche studied
the site for decades and
demonstrated the figures
are part of a complex cere-
monial landscape associ-
ated with the Nazca culture
and the ceremonial center
of Cahuachi.
Today, that legacy faces
growing pressure. More
than 130 illegal mineral
processing plants operate
among populated areas,
farmland and buffer zones
surrmmding the archae-
ological complex, while the
accumulation of garbage,
urban expansion and loot-
ing of archaeological re-
sins are further degrad-
ing the site, RT en Espanol
reported.
Residents have also
reported the presence of
illegal dumping sites and
dead animals on the plains
where the geoglyphs are
found.
As illegal mining ex-
pands, the Peruvian gov-
ernment said it has in-
tensified operations against
these plants.
During an operation in
the district of Inambari, in
the Amazon region of
Madre de Dios, members
of the Army, the National
Police and the Specialized
Environmental Prose-
cutor's Office destroyed 17
clandestine camps,13 rafts,
five pits, four hoppers and
various pieces of equip-
ment used for illegal gold
coming, Infobae Perri re-
ported over the weekend,
citing the Ministry of De-
fense.
The destroyed assets
were valued at more than
$1.6 million. Between Jan-
uary and May, authorities
destroyed machinery and
equipment used by organi-
zations engaged in illegal
mining valued at more than
$337 million, according to
the Ministry of Defense,
Infobae Perri said.
For the Ombudsman's
Office, the expansion of
these conflicts shows that
illegal mining is no longer
solely an environmental or
economic problem but has
become a governance chal-
lenge that threatens com-
munities, natural resources
and part of Peru's most
important cultural heritage.
