RESOLUT#ON NO.
A RESOLUTION URGING THE DIVISION OF ARCHIVES
HISTORY ANP RECORDS MANAGEMENT OF THE
DEPARTMENT OF STATE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA
TO APPROVE THE NOMINATION OF THE GESU CATHOLIC
CHURCH, 118 N. E. 2ND STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA
TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER AND TO SUBMIT ITS
APPROVAL TO THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE IN
WASHINGTON, D.C. AS EXPEDITIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE.
WHEREAS, the Gesu Catholic Church was founded in 1896,
which was the same year that the City of Miami was incorporated;
and
WHEREAS, Henry Flagler, one of the early pioneers of the City
of Miami, who was responsible for extending the Florida East
Coast Railroad from Palm Beach to Miami, gave the property on
which the Church is located to Father Ambrose Fontan, S.J., the
first Pastor; and
WHEREAS, the first building was started in 1897 and completed
in 1898 due in part to the civic efforts of John B. Reilly, the
first Mayor of Miami; and
WHEREAS, the present building was built in 1922 and is
celebrating its 51st anniversary; and
WHEREAS, the present building housed the U.S.O. during World
War I I ; and
WHEREAS, people from all parts of this country and other
countries visit the church daily; and
WHEREAS, approximately 800 people pass through the church
each day for prayers; and
WHEREAS, the church has a long and colorful history;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Commission of the City of Miaini urges the
Division of Arohivea History and Records Management of the
Department of State of the State of Florida to approve the
nomination of the Gesu Catholic Church, 118 N. E. 2nd Street,
Miami, Florida to the National Register and to submit its
approval to the National Park Service in Washington, D. C. as
expeditiously as possible.
Section 2. The City Clerk of the City of Miami is hereby
directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the following
persons:
