HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-73-0918RESOLUTION NO. • 1 egi• '/F A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE POLICY OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT RAPE VICTIMS WHO COME WITHIN THE PURVIEW AND JURISDICTION OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BE TAKEN TO THE RAPE TREATMENT CENTER AT JACKSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BEFORE INTERROGATION BY POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, the Commission of Metropolitan Dade County has decided to create a Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital; and WHEREAS, said Center proposes to offer fast and more humane treatment to rape victims; and WHEREAS, said center is designed to give psychological counselling and aid efforts at prosecution; and WHEREAS, it is designed to make it easier and less un- comfortable for the treatment and interrogation of rape victims; and WHEREAS, State Attorney Richard Gerstein has stated that by making it easier and less uncomfortable for the treatment and interrogation of rape victims by persons more sympathetic to rape trauma will increase the likelihood of convictions; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. That it is declared to be the policy of the City Commission of the City of Miami, Florida that rape victims who come within the purview and jurisdiction of the Police Department of the City of Miami, Florida, be taken to the Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for medical attention, psychological counselling and other treatment afforded by said Center before interroga- tion by Police Department officials.
