HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-73-0629RESOLUTION NO. 73-629 A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE POLICY OF THE COMMISSION THAT A HISTORICAL MARKER COM- MEMORATING THE LANDING OF DON PEDRO MENENDEZ de AVILES', WHO LANDED AT THE MOUTH OF THE MIAMI RIVER IN 1567, AND WAS THE FIRST RECORDED EUROPEAN CONTACT WITH WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS MIAMI, BE PLACED AT THE TRAFFIC ISLAND AT THE INTERSECTION OF BISCAYNE BOULEVARD AND S.E. 2ND STREET; REQUESTING THE CITY MANAGER TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF SUCH LOCATION, AND FURTHER, THAT SUCH ACTION BE CONTINGENT UPON THE APPROVAL OF THE MIAMI MEMORIAL COMMITTEE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: That the policy of the Commission be, and it is, that a historical marker commemorating the landing of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, who landed at the mouth of the Miami River in 1567, and who was the first recorded European contact with what is now known as Miami, be placed at the traffic island at the intersection of Biscayne Boulevard and SE 2nd Street; re- questing the City Manager to investigate the feasibility of such location; and further, that such action be contingent upon the approval of the Miami Memorial Committee.
