BACKGROUNDER - Fifth Street Bridge Project
Junior League of Miami
Miami River Restoration Committee
"Banks Are Beautiful Campaign"
The River Restoration Committee of the Junior League of Miami
plans to continue its "Banks are Beautiful" clean-up campaign
on the banks of the Miami River by constructing a mini -park
on vacant, city -owned land adjacent to the Fifth Street bridge.
Although the land is city -owned, the Junior League does not ask
the city to supply any revenues for the project. All :materials
and labor will be either donated or purchased with Junior League
funds.
DESCRIPTION
The land in question runs approximately 180 feet along the river
and tapers in depth from 23 feet to a point. Northwest North
River Drive borders on the north of the property.
The land is vacant except for abandoned concrete pilings and
crossbars once used to hold billboards. The grounds are not
landscaped and hz,.ve become a depository for discarded trash
and abandoned vessels.
PROPOSED PLAN
The Fifth Street bridge site is the fourth, and most ambitious,
in a series of clean-up projects initiated and carried out by
the Junior League in cooperation with other citizen groups and
local industry.
The first three projects, now completed, required cleaning and
landscaping; this is the first project to require construction.

Plans call for the construction of a mini -park complete with
boardwalk, benches, railings, and landscaped areas. A walkway
would connect the boardwalk and the sidewalk. Easy -care materials
such as telephone poles and salt -treated wood would be used
in construction so there would be no problem of maintenance
once the project is completed.
CONSTRUCTION MECHANICS
Construction would be on top of the already existing concrete
pilings. Telephone poles would be attached to the pilings and
the boardwalk superstructure railings and benches would be
built on them. Landscaping would then provide the finishing
touches behind the walkway and benches.
MATERIALS AND LABOR
The donation and/or purchase of all material will be coordinated
by the Junior League. Those who have already donated materials
or services specifically for the Fifth Street bridge project are:

HISTORY OF THE RIVER RESTORATION COMMITTEE
The Miami River Restoration Committee of the Junior League of
Miami was formed in December, 1970, to focus attention on the
deterioration of the Miami River and to stimulate community
action toward the improvement of the quality of its water.
Since that time, the Junior League has researched and worked
on the" river with several projects, the latest of which is
the "Banks Are Beautiful" campaign.

The "Banks Are Beautiful" campaign's goals are to clean-up
and professionally landscape and beautify property along the
river to give visual, tangible evidence of how the area can
look.
Five target areas were selected for beautification, represent-
ing every type of property along the Miami River. The sites
and their categories are:
