HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-74-0041RESOLUTION NO,'''/ A RESOLUTION BY THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI URGING OUR COLLEAGUES, THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH MIAMI, TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION ALL OF THE FACTORS INVOLVED, HAVE FAITH IN THE GOOD WILL OF OFFICIALS WHO ARE ATTEMPTING TO PROCEED WITH PLANS FOR AN AREA - WIDE SEWAGE FACILITY, AND TO BE PATIENT IN THEIR OBJECTIONS SO THAT AFFIRMATIVE STEPS MAY CONTINUE TO BE TAKEN TO SOLVE THE AREA -WIDE SEWAGE PROBLEM WITH FEDERAL FUNDS; AND FURTHER URGING THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH MIAMI TO RECONSIDER THEIR POSI- TION WITH RESPECT TO A PROPOSED LAW SUIT DESIGNED TO PROHIBIT THE ERECTION OF A COUNTY -WIDE SEWAGE FACILITY. WHEREAS, the City of Miami many years ago led both Dade County and Florida in establishing a sewage system and a modern sewage treatment plant, and originally expended the sum of approximately $16,000,000 at our plant in Virginia Key, and, in so doing, the sewage system has been continually expanded and improved over the years and was worth more than $500,000,000 when the City turned over the operations to the Miami -Metro Water and Sewer Board; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami has the finest and most extensive sewage facilities in the State of Florida providing over 65% of the city sewage; and WHEREAS, historically, by its pragmatic attitude, the City of Miami has brought the disposal of sewage to a point which is unparalleled by any other municipality in the State of Florida; and ITEM I'J 0 . ____3 ,. cry Cq (;,: __ vIEET1 3114t31. a ‘1 74 Uuitict; Nr.. .r,If ••• WHEREAS, the City of Miami, in the interest of efficiency and cooperation with Metro, in providing proper sewage disposal and treatment for the entire area of Dade De artment of County, did transfer in the best interest of all its/Water and Sewers to Metropolitan Dade County; and WHEREAS, continuously over the years, elected and appointed officialsoof the City of Miami have expressed them- selves as being in favor of an area -wide sewage disposal system and have acted accordingly; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami is still strongly in favor of improving our sewage situation and recognizes that this cannot be done without federal funds; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami, even though we have specific objections to certain elements of the proposed plans, realizes the need to move forward so that a proposed allocation of federal funds in the amount of ap- proximately $86,000,000 for an area -wide sewage facility will not be jeopardized; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the Mayor and Members of the Com- mission of the City of Miami respectfully urge our colleagues, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of North Miami to take into consideration all of the factors involved, have faith in the good will of officials who are attempting to proceed with plans for an area -wide sewage facility, and to be -2- S I O LLOW patient in their objections so that affirmative steps may continue to be taken to solve the area -wide sewage problem with federal funds. Section 2. That the Mayor and Members of the Commission of the City of Miami further urge the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of North Miami to reconsider their position with respect to a proposed law suit designed to prohibit the erection of a county -wide sewage facility.
