City of Homestead
National Bicycling Center
10-23.75 Agenda Item
Recently, Mrs. Nadine Fichter, a member of the Dade County Bikeways
Advisory Committee, asked for a meeting to inform the City Administra-
tion of the plans for constructing a National Bicycling Center in the City of
Homestead. As requested, a meeting was held with Mrs. Fichter, Mr.
Harry Shaffer, Chairman of the Dade County Bikeways Advisory Committee,
Mr. Alfred Goodman of Homestead, and several others, at which time the
design and renderings of the proposed facility were discussed. This center
is to include a cycling museum, auditorium, tour planning center, instruc-
tion area and a 1.000 seat velodrome. Plans for this facility are now on the
architect's drawing board, and it is to be built in the near future in the area
recently annexed by the City of Homestead.
The Homestead group had heard the City of Miami is in the planning stage
for a velodrome the same size as proposed by Homestead, but that Miami's
would include seating for only 100 people and not provide the attendant facili-
ties proposed for the Homestead area. It was their thought that after having
been informed of the Homestead plans, the Miami City Commission may wish
to reconsider constructing a velodrome at Robert King High Park. Subsequently,
a meeting was held with representatives from Homestead and representatives
of the proponents for the Robert King High velodrome to ascertain if these
facilities would be in competition with each other and whether or. not South
Florida could support two bicycle racing courses.
After having viewed the plans for the proposed Homestead project, t have
asked representatives of the National aicycling Foundation to make their
presentation to the City Commission.
