Describe your educational background and or general knowledge of the Arts. My interest in the Arts solidified while in college, UMass•Amhersl, where i worked as the Co-editor and later Editor of the DRUM Magazine, a literary magazine. that grew out of the Black Arts Movement (BAM) of the 1960s-1970s. BAM was known as the "aesthetic and spiritual sister' of Black Power. Working on the DRUM, I interviewed and/or worked with various cultural icons whose roots were in the visual, literary and performing arts, such as Sonia Sanchez. Nikki Giovanni. Amiri Bakara, Nelson Stevens, James Baldwin and Shirley Graham -Dubois. After graduating, i continued my appreciation For the Arts, visiting art galleries and cultural centers while riving abroad in Europe, Northern Africa and the Caribbean. I have seen first hand how art can unify marginalized communities and expose children and young adults to explore their arlislic talents. Growing up in Coconut Grove, I was exposed to the various artists who lived in the Grove and displayed their artistic skills and talents. watched Black women from South Carolina and the Bahamians weave baskets on their Front porches and attended quilting circles where women stitched their scraps of memories into elaborate quilts. 3. Describe any prior community or personal involvement that you may have had that demonstrates interest in the Visual Arts, Public Art or the Performing Arts. rp13 As a young girl, 1 was surrounded by visual and performing arts. In Coconut Grove, my participation in Visual Arts started in the Churc -{or r +r African -American children, our public speaking and performance skills begin in church on Youth Day. Easter. and Christmas. From the -ir4le to !0 elaborate Easter plays and Christmas reenactments of the birth of Jesus, I have either organized these events or participated in the niy pn. " .0; stated previously, I worked with some founding members of the BAM and now that I am reared. as a Board member t can begin to explot4 ways to expose mernbers of the community to the various art mediums. There needs to be expanded opportunities for marginalized members Rt('r1 - the community to experience the visual and pertorrnarce arts. 4. What is Ft about the Art in Public Places Board that is compatible with your experience and of specific interest to you, and why? The purpose and intent of the Art in Public Places Board appeals to me because the cultural legacy of Miami and Miamians needs to be preserved for future generations. I believe that the City has a obligation to provide educational and cultural programs for its residents. especially since exposure to the visual and performance arts is being reduced in the public schools. As a former educator, I believe that Miami's children and youth interest in the Arts starts first with exposure and next with concrete opportunities to have hands-on experiences with the various mediums. I am interested in ensuring that cultural traditions, that may not be readily conceived of as "art," are preserved and taught to our children. For example, many children whose lineage is of Caribbean descent don't realize that basket weaving is tradition that is both aesthetic and utilitarian. As a former General Counsel of three universities. I have advised on cultural programming, capital development, capital campaigns, and historic preservation prooects. I have also had negotiate contracts governing the installation, sale and/or donations of art works. My legal acumen and experience will provide me with skills that can benefit me in dispersing my duties as a Board rne. 5. if appointed, what specific goals would you like to see the Public Art Board achieve, and why? How would you suggest accomplishing this? I would like to the Public Art Board to take an inventory of the different locations in the City where rnurals, monuments. artifacts and other aspects of the Gity's heritage are located/stored and create digital guide where the public can access this information in one piece. For example, there are several murals in Overtown, Liberty City, Little Havana, Little Haiti and other areas of the City. This can be accomplished by doing a visual assessment or creating an on-line Zink for the curators of these murals to input their inlormation. I would also like to expand art programs 10 children and adults.
