Man injured in shooting is arrested
after cops discover murder warrant
mfra.sant@miamiheraldmm
A man who was injured
in a Monday shooting was
arrested after officers
realized he was a suspect
in a 2024 homicide, ac-
cording to the Pembroke
Pines Police Department
Kevonte Irons, 26, was
involved in the Monday
shooting in the city of
West Park, police said in a
statement, which did not
detail Irons' role in the
incident, other involved
parties or exact time or
place.
He was taken to a hospi-
tal, police said. Broward
County Sheriff's Office
deputies placed Irons in
custody after discovering
his warrant for first -degree
murder in connection with
a 2024 Pembroke Pines
shooting, police said.
The warrant stemmed
from an Oct 26, 2024,
shooting in the area of
11700 Sheridan St.
When officers arrived
around 1 a.m., they saw a
driver was shot inside a
crashed Nissan Altima,
police said. He was taken
to a nearby hospital and
died.
"Based on a preliminary
investigation, detectives
believe at least two vehi-
cles were driving reckless
along Sheridan Street,"
police said.' An occupant
from one vehicle fired
shots at the driver of the
Nissan Altima"
More than a year later,
detectives asked for the
public's help in locating
Irons. A second man, Cal -
vim Brownlee, 24, had
already been identified as
a suspect and was arrested
on Nov. 27, 2024.
Both men are accused of
first -degree murder.
Brownlee is being held
without bond at the Bro-
ward County Main Jail,
and Irons was not listed
Wednesday as being in
custody. Assistant Public
Defender Kirk Elizabeth
Shields, who is listed as
representing Brownlee,
had yet to respond to a
request for comments.
Irons did not have an at-
tomey listed in Broward
County court records.
A Pembroke Pines
spokesperson said the
department couldn't offer
information about Irons'
involvement in the West
Park shooting because the
Broward Sheriffs Office is
investigating the incident.
When asked via email if
Irons was a victim in a
West Park strip -club
shooting on Monday, a
BSO spokesperson wrote:
"BSO deputies arrested
Kevonte Irons on a Pem-
broke Pines warrant fol-
lowing an incident that
occurred in West Park.
Irons was injured during
that incident"
The Broward County
Sheriff's Office announced
Monday that a man was
shot outside The Play-
house Gentlemen's Club,
located at 5775 W. Hallan-
dale Beach Blvd. in West
Park, just before 1 a.m.,
according to CBS News
Miami, a Miami Herald
news partner. He was
taken to a hospital for
treatment.

MURDER
Ragan's violent crime
spree began with the Nov.
1, 2013, execution -style
killing of Luis Miguel
Perez, a small-time drug
dealer, at a motel and
ended with the Nov. 22,
2013, murder of Aaron at
the Hong Kong Nail Salon,
14832 NW Seventh Ave.
On the day of Aaron's
murder, Ragan and anoth-
er
— whom has never
been identified — burst
into the nail salon with
their guns drawn and
collected more than $300
in cash and jewelry from
customers and employees.
As they were leaving,
investigators say, Ragan
tumed around and fired at
Aaron and his father,
killing the child and leav-
ing his father Hai Nam Vu
with a gunshot wound.
The boy's father sur-
vived.
The death of Aaron,
who played trombone in
his school orchestra and
had the role of a wise man
in his school's Christmas
play, galvanized the com-
munity. Family, friends
and longtime customers of
his parents' nail salon
attended his viewing and
funeral services.
Last May, a Miami jury
voted to sentence Ragan
to life in prison, rather
than the death penalty, for
Perez's murder.
During the sentencing
trial, Ragan's defense
team argued his life
should be spared because
of a troubled childhood in
which he regularly
changed schools and com-
mitted crimes that escalat-
ed in gravity. Ragan's lead
attomey Tony Moss ex-
plained how his father was
locked up for life after
being convicted of murder
while Ragan was still in
his mother's womb and
how several family mem-
bers were absent during
his upbringing, many
serving time for serious
ones. (Moss defended
Ragan's father in a murder
case in the 1990s.)
Lead state prosecutor
Scott Warfman argued
that Ragan was "brazen"
in his crime wave — and
was killing for the "thrill."
"He left behind his path
of destruction and pain,"
Warfman said during the
sentencing.
By the end of the three-
week crime spree, Ragan
was responsible for two
killings, two attempted
murders and a vicious
robbery at an all-night
hamburger joint.

limitation. Diagnosed with
ADHD himself, he empha-
sizes discipline, effort and
personal responsibility,
encouraging students to
harness their energy and
avoid malting excuses. He
jokingly thanked his wife
during his speech for put-
ting up with the "crazy
stuff' that ADHD can
bring.
"Do what others won't"
is Rabelo's personal phi-
losophy, which he credits
to his late mother. He
started his speech by wish-
ing her a happy birthday,
adding that he missed her
and hoped she was proud.
Of his three brothers, it
was his youngest, Lazar,
who most inspired him to
become ateacher. Lazar
developed cerebral palsy
alter a childhood medical
emergency. Despite doc-
tors' grim predictions,
Rabelo's mother rejected
imposed limits, a perspec-
tive that shaped his belief
in perseverance and possi-
bil"He inspired me to work
with individuals facing his
remarkable loss," Rabelo
said in his speech.
At school, Rabelo has
eamed a reputation as the
"social, emotional and
mental health guru," in-
cluding helping a strug-
gling student who still tells
him, "Mr. Rabelo, you
saved me," he told the
Miami Herald in an in-
terview a week before he
was named the winner.
After returning from a
six-month leave with just
six weeks to prepare stu-
dents for exams, his class-
es still achieved a 71%
pass rate, and for the past
three years, his students
have exceeded district and
state scores.
He often teaches stu-
dents new to the country
or learning English, re-
minding them that society
doesn't know how hard
they're willing to work.
A quiet student once told
him, "We do so well be-
cause we click with you,"
inspiring the classroom
principle "ICLK" —inspire
compassion, love and kind-
ness. That idea carried
beyond the classroom
when students petitioned
City Hall to make South
Miami the nation's first
Compassionate City.
Though the designation
wasn't adopted, the lesson
stuck.
"Beside my daughters,
my students are the legacy
I get to leave behind,"

of the Year award.
mentioning that some of
his former students were
present for the ceremony.
OTHER WINNERS
There was constant
cheering and applause as
hundreds of people came
dressed up to celebrate
educators. The attendees
enjoyed a "Wicked" per-
formance by the theater
students at Miami Arts
Studio Middle School.
Hand-held cardboard
cut-outs of the finalists'
faces were throughout the
convention ballroom as
their friends and families
waved them around
proudly.
"They paint a canvas of
the significance, the influ-
ence
and the lasting im-
pact of a teacher," said
Jose L. Dories, the super-
intendent of Miami -Dade
County Public Schools.
They gve us arare gift
... the gift of getting to
honor them and to reflect
on the countless lives
forever changed because
they chose to teach."
Runner-up for Teacher
of the Year was Dale J.
Adamson, who has spent
14 years teaching math,
robotics and engineering
at Howard D. McMillan
Middle School. Influenced
rem
he stage after being named
Francisco R. Walker Teacher
by his mother, a longtime
math teacher, Adamson
emphasizes strong rela-
tionships and high expec-
tations — an approach that
has helped his Algebra I
students maintain a 98%
proficiency rate on the
End -of -Course exam for
more than a decade.
Much of Adamson's
work centers on breaking
down students' fear of
math and STEM, a mis-
sion that led him to build
the school's robotics pro-
gram from scratch. With
no formal robotics back-
ground, he started with a
single kit and a small
after -school club that has
grown into a full course
serving more than 200
students and earning
aw
ards.
The two other finalists
were Julia Pennington -
Gilchrist, a language arts
teacher at Dr. Frederica S.
Wilson/Skyway Elemen-
tary School, and Gary
Spitnale, a culinary arts
teacher at Miami Lakes
Educational Center and
Technical College.
Kristian Jose Luciano, of
Homestead Middle
School, was named Rookie
Teacher of the Year.
