Has Alice
In Clover
She Gets $10,000
For Her Hower
by VRAMC HUCK
amino Newspsp*ri tervict
PHILADELPHIA — For Mrs.
Alice Vonk, 67-year-old widow
from sully, Iowa (pop. 710), it
marks the end of 21 years of work-
ing in het backyard garden to help
in a search.
For David Burpee, 82, patriarch
of one of the oldest and largest
seed firms in America, it marks the
end of 56 years of searching.
This week, Burpee paid Mrs.
Vonk $10,000 for her white mari-
gold.
THE PAYMENT brought to an
end the W. Atlee Burpee Co.'s
standing offer of $10,000 for seed
yielding a white marigold 21/y inch-
es across — an offer which has ap•
peered in its catalogs every year
since 1954.
Burpee, whose fattier started the
seed firm in 1876, presented the
check to Mrs. Vonk during ceremo-
nies at his Fordhook Farm near
Doylestown, Pa.
"My knees are shaking but it
probably doesn't show, " said Mrs.
Vonk at the ceremony. "I'll proba-
bly fall apart tomorrow."
As for the money, Mrs. Vonk said
she planned to take some of it and
"spend it foolishly."
"OH, I DON'T mean blow it all,
poof, like that, but I'm going to
blow some of it foolishly. If I had
children or grandchildren who
needed to be educated, it would be
different, but they're all in good
shape, so, I'm going to spend some
of it."
Mrs. Vonk, who has eight chit -

dren, 24 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild, started her first
garden in the same year that David
Burpee began his search for a white
marigold.
At that time, the nearest thing to
the elusive white was a deep or-
ange.
"I thought of offering the $10,000
in 1920, but 1 thought that's not
fair, it might be impossible," said
Burpee. So for the next 34 years,
Burpee and his company plant
breeders worked to develop a pure
white flower,
IN 1954, Burpee said, the compa-
ny decided to offer the prize and
get home gardeners to help in the
development. By then, a lemon yel-
low was the closest to white.
Mrs. Vonk, who was 11 years old
when she began gardening, sent her
first seeds to Burpee for testing in
the initial year of the prize offering.
Except for bad gardening years, she
has sent in samples of her whitest
flowers every year.
"I'm one of those people who will
try anything," she said. "If you
don't try, you don't ever succeed.
"I didn't Work hard at it; it was
fun It's a thing I can do and I
liked the challenge," she said.
Asked what her favorite flower
is, the stout, white haired woman
replied: "The marigold is now."
The Burpee seed company, whose
catalogs are like a harbinger of
spring when they arrive in four mil-
lion homes every January, spent
more than $250,000 on research and
testing of seeds sent in by garden-
ers before awarding Mrs. Vonk the
$10,000 prize.

"I figured the guard panicked,

Williams was a member of th

shootings.
Williams was one of the few
rors Who would comment about thi
trial.
ALBERT E. HUNT of Shake'
Heights said there was a reason he
couldn't talk about it but refused tc
elaborate. Another, Cecelia M.
Klancar of Euclid, had tears in her
eyes when she told newSmen she
wouldn't discuss it at any time.
Williams said the deliberations
left all the jurors emotionally
drained. "We had to hide our "emo
tions," be said. "We had to follow
the law rather than use sympathy.".
The film he described was 8mm
footage taken by Christopher Abell,
then a Kent State student, from his
fifth floor dormitory window 1,600
fee -from the site of the gunfire.
Though the poor quality made it
"hard to see," he said, "you could
see this run up the hill toward the
guard. According to the film they
were fairly close.
"That's what convinced me," he
said.
HE SAiD THERE were about 70
guardsmen and that "they were
outnumbered quite a bit," though
he couldn't tell how many ^

"I wasn't completely convinced

involved "quite a bit of`soul-search-

He said every member of the jury

the deliberations. He also said there
was argument back and forth, that
"everybody was vocal; everybody
had their say ... even the quiet

"WHEN WE came out of there,
everyone of us was satisfied with
the decision." he said. "V1re couldn't

"I knew no matter which way we

we were going to change their lives

"That's a hard decision. They were

"I didn't want. 'to be in this posi

to be in it again."
jl'itANWititt, a copyrighted
story in the Cleveland Press quot-
ing another juror indicated that
Gov. Rhodes was cleared of liability
in the shootings by the time the
jury took its first ballot Monday af•
ternooh.
The story quoted Mrs. Ellen Gas -
Rana, a juror who dissented from
the blanket acquittal, as saying,
"There were enough votes to re-
solve the (Rhodes) issue the first
time we voted."
The jury split 9-3 when polled,
the precise majority needed to clear
Rhodes, former KSU president Rob-
ert White and the National Guards-
men of liability.
Mrs. Gaskalla, Lorain, Ohio, a 27-
year-old blonde employed in the ac-
counting office of Nordson Co.; said
the jury which received the case At
midday Aug. 22 deliberated that af-
ternoon, all the next day and Mott
of Monday before taking its first
vote. •
"After that there was a iot of

were at least seven votes (for ac-
quittal) on all the test of the deftly
dents," the report quoted her es
saying,
THE JURORS had more than 400
