Following policy established by the Miami City Commission, joint efforts are
under way between the Community Relations Board representatives and repre'
sentatives of the City of Miami to develop and achieve a planned program for
the upgrading of living conditions in the Central Miami District. Representam
tives of the City of lvliatni Police Department have been working for some time
with the Community Relations Board identifying areas of mutual concern,
This collaboration was instituted to collectively focus attention on crime, moral
and other degrading elements active in the Central District that affect the quality
of life of the citizens of the City of Miami who live in this district.
On June 3, Mr. Robert Fi. Simms, Executive Director of the Community Relations
Board, and Imet with Department Directors of the Building, Public Works, Police,
Parks and Recreation, Sanitation, and Fire Departments to discuss ways of
evolving a comprehensive plan for the needed improvements. As a result of this
meeting, an atlas of aerial photographs was furnished to each Department Director
and he was instructed to personally inspect the Central Area District lying between
the F. E. C. Railway tracks and N. W. 7th Avenue, from N. W. 5th to-20th Streets._
The purpose of this personal inspection was to identify specific actions within the
various Department's jurisdictions that could be taken in upgrading and changing
conditions in this pilot area.
Mr. Simms has requested, and has been put on, the July 17 City Commission
agenda (item number 24), so that he may present to the City Commission the
views of the Community Relations Board as to this joint pilot undertaking with
the City of Miami and other matters of mutual concern.
