Please refer to your Stine 2, 19?5 memorandum regarding a request
for a resolution amending the existing contract with 'Watson Tree Service
to provide for paten tree stump removal at a unit price of $3. 00 each and
to our /line 3 telephone conversation.
When the bids were taken for the palm tree removal, Watson Tree Service
bid of $9.00 per tree for removing a dead palm was the lowest bid received.
This unit price bid covered cutting the palm into haulable sections, dis-
posing of these sections of the trunk and removing the remaining tree
stump down to a level flush with the ground. Unfortunately, the City did
not ask for a breakdown of this complete tree removal into prices for
cutting down the tree, disposing of it, and removing the stump.
At the time of bidding, City forces were also removing dead palms in one
operation and grinding or removing the stumps in another. Since that
time, however, the stump grinding equipment belonging to the City has
broken down and is no longer available for stump removal. As a result,
many trees have been removed but the stumps, ranging in height from a
few to several inches above ground, remain and are definite hazards to
autoraobile parking in the side parkways.
Our original request for a resolution amending this contract would enable
the City under the existing contract and its funding to remove these hazards.
The present contract now provides for this item in the complete tree removal
but not separately. However, inasmuch as the existing award was to the
low bidder and he is only quoting the City a part of his existing unit price
for this work, it is to the City's advantage to modify this contract to pro-
vide this service.
If you have further questions regarding this bid and our request to modify
the existing contract, please call me.
