Ferret Mayor , ,1 I SUBJECT. Dr. Robert G. Mennis Tigertail Association appearance before Commission REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: • Please place the name of Dr. Robert G. Please find the enclosed letter which details the request for an appearance. cc: Dr. Robert G. Mennis MAF/ew Robert G. Mennis, M. D, 2330 Tigertail Court Miami, Florida 33133 1,1 - `ir' 7 !,,zL r .d : ac4) /.ar k y A-/ 3 i February 13, 1975 The Honorable Maurice Ferrer :;ayor of the City of Miami City hall - - Dinner Key Miami, Florida 33133 Dear Mayor Ferrer: Over the past two years I and other members of the Tigertail Association nave followed with interest the development of Kennedy Park and have for tree most part been pleased with the progress in developing the park so that it has the least disruptive impact on the adjacent residential community in Coconut Grove. The Association has just learned however that the lighting being planned for the park is to be of the high pressure sodium "crime fighter" variety. Approximately one year ago when an inquiry was made as to the type of lighting to be installed we were told that this variety of light would not be installed in the park. Our home owner's association is solidly opposed to the installation of this variety of lighting, and as the other homeowner associations in our area become aware of these plans I think you will find a similar sentiment in these groups. e:niie an argument mignt be made for use of this type of lighting in areas stcn as the "garment districts" North Coconut Grove is not an analagous cu,ti on. Tne need for this type of lighting escapes us as the majority of the park has been pitch black at night except for the extreme North erd where temporary lighting exists and no crime problem has yet presented itself. The residents in the area strongly resent this type of lighting especially residents on the periphery of the park or overlooking the park Itself. nave talked with Mr. Grover Larkin who is apparently in charge of the ::enr.edy Park Lighting Project at the Public Works Department and I understand several alternatives or iiyhi.ing are available, any of which is preferable to the high pressure sodium. These alternatives include metal halide (which offers a high intensity light also) Mercury vapor, etc. One of these alternative lights could be installed in the same fixtures and poles that are currentiy on order namely the Periciyne pole fixtures, None of this material has yet been delivered or installed and since only a different type of light bulb needs to be ordered to eliminate our objection, if you and your commissioners could expedite this move we would be greatly appreciative. Incidentally, I would imagine that there would be a savings ih electricity costs as a recent Herald article stated that these type of lights use approximately twice as' much electricity as conventional varieties: Also the price for the alternative type bulbs themselves should be lower. I will forward copies of this letter to other commission members and perhaps this topic can be presented in the next commission meeting, We hope you and the commission members will help us retain the aesthetic appeal of our community. Sincerely, QE: Q Robert G. Mennis, M.G. R M/ n m cc: Commissioner Manuel() Rebozo Cu„ssioner Rose Gordon Commissioner Theodore Gibson Commissioner Vic -Mayor J.G.
