CITY OF MIAMI
SENIOR ADULT DAY CENTER

march 12, 1975
BACKGROUND
The Douglas Gardens City of Miami Senior
Adult Center being dedicated today is designed
to repIace the loneliness and uselessness
often prevalent among our senior adults, many
of whom have been pioneers in this community.
Instead, the center offers as an
alternative a stimulating and fulfilling
program to make "the golden years" productive
and happy ones.
Inaugurated under the City of Miami
Department of Parks and Recreation, this pilot
program is one of few in the country. It deals
not only with the participants' physical needs,
but also with the social and human needs
persons of all ages have.
Spearheaded by Commissioner Rose Gordon,
the program received the backing of the
Miami City Commission which allocated $75,0OO
in federal revenue sharing funds to put it
into motion.
The Douglas Gardens Miami Jewish Home and
iospital for the Aged, an institution in
the community for 28 years, was contracted by
the city to manage the center and provide a
wide range of support services.
This unique program gives participants the
opportunity to strengthen themselves physically,
intellectually, artistically and socially,
while giving them a chance to share their
diverse ethnic backgrounds and special talents
with others.

Dear Mayor Ferre:
It has been brought to m.v attention th`the City of
Miami has imposed a fee of $,C(t%00 per igiam for use of
softball facilities by the Sunday Morning Adult Soft-
ball League.
This league has been using various city parks for
Sunday morning softball games for approximately
twenty years without fee. The imposition of this
fee is a great inconvenience and not justifiable
under present circumstances.
The "Parks for People" program has been adopted to
encourage, rather than discourage the use of parks.
Our parks and recreational programs are and should
be supported by ad valorum. taxes. The imposition of
user fees on top of property taxes for this program
is unconscionable.
Your consideration of this request to waive this fee
is sincerely appreciated.
Very truly yours,
ARDEN M . S I.FGr NDORF
