Mayor Maurice Fette and Members of the City Commission City Hall Miami, Florida Honorable Commissioners: This letter is to request approval by the Miami City Commission for two special activities to be held in conjunction with the Sedond Annual Benefit Fiesta for Migrant Farmworkers on Watson Island, . Sunday, April 27, 1975. The City of Miami Department of Parks . and Recreation has already issued an official permit, No. 1328, for the use of. Watson island and we are working closely with Mr. Al Howard, Director of Parks and Recreation, in planning and coordinating the event. Last year, the first Benefit Fiesta was held at the Carrollton School in Coconut Grove. We were grateful for the assistance of the City of Miami in helping to make the Fiesta a highly successful community event and we know you will appreciate the attached letter of commendation to the Fiesta Committee from Carrollton Headmistress Sister Catherine Baxter. This years Fiesta is being co -sponsored by the United Farm Workers Citizens Support Committee (a partial listing appears on the letterhead) and the Florida Christian Migrant Ministry. The Citizens Committee is composed of a broad variety of Miami -area businessmen, religious and community leaders who are volunteering their time and professional skills on behalf of migrant farmworkers and of the Benefit Fiesta. Only two items need your approval for the Fiesta to take place. On the advice of Mr. Howard, we are requesting approval from the Miami City Commission for the following special activities at the Fiesta: (a) to sell food, non-alcoholic beverages, and arts and crafts items. (b) to construct and operate a temporary barbecue, consisting of one designated charcoal grill area set on concrete block. The area will be manned at all times by authorized Fiesta personnel and will not be accessible to the public. The barbecue will be completely dismantled and cleaned up immediately following the event. We are grateful or your attention and assistance and look forward t ano er utiful community wide Fiest Rev. I i.di2ibA 33 i 33 January 27, 1975 To Whom It May Concern: Last April, Carrollton School hostedat=Benefit Fiesta for Migrant Farmworkers in coordination with National Farmworker Week. The Fiesta attracted well over four thousand persons who came to participate in the joyous occasion, The Fiesta Committee, co-ordinated by Mrs. Juanita Brown, was comprised of a broad variety of Dade County community and business leaders, businessmen, farmworkers themselves and committed citizens from all walks of life who volunteered their time and skills and services. We worked closely with the Committee and were impressed and very pleased with their ability to organize, to foresee needs on all levels, and to supervise a community -wide event which attracted even more people than they had even hoped for. All the arrangements were carefully supervised by competent Committee members - before, during, and after the Fiesta. Sometimes the truest test of organization is the "after -test" and would like to comment especially on the excellent care that was taken of our grounds and facilities, and the complete readiness of our grounds and buildings for school classes the next day. No maintenance clean up was re- quired on our part. They are to be commended for this. Were it not for a lack of parking space and suffiently sized meeting areas, Carrollton School would be glad to host this year's Fiesta. We have offered our facilities for organizational meetings and will continue to work with the Committee in whatever way we can. The Fiesta was successful. We hope the Committee will be able to continue what was so very well begun. If there is need for any further de- tails from us, please do not hesitate to call. Details were handled for us by Sister Claire Kontiolf, who would be happy to talk with you. (446-5673) Juanita Brown and those with whom she worked deserve the appreciation of us all. The time, skill, energy and joy that was poured into the Fiesta could anly result in the day that it became for all - a truly joyous experience. Sincerely, / Sister Catherine Baxter Headmistress, Carrollton School
