SW 5 Street Bulkhead Project

In July, 1975 the owner of theproperty on the .south side of SW 5
Street at the Miami River requested that the Department of Public
Works construct a bulkhead at the end of SW 5 Street and the Miami
River in conjunction with bulkhead repair work on private property.
The purpose of the bulldic:ad tee i„ cltect the c:.i sting building,
bulkhead, roadway and sanitary sewer manhole from erosion and to
eliminate a refuse collecting pocket along the shoreline.
The Department of Public Works filed applications for a Vertical
Concrete Slab Bulkhead with the Axriv Corps of Engineers, the Central
and Southern Florida Flood Control District and the State of Florida
Department of Environmental Regulations. The Department.: of Environ-
mental Regulations denied permission to construct a vertical slab
bulkhead but approved and issued a permit for sand and cement bag
rip -rap to protect the existing buildings, bulkhead and shoreline.
The Army Corps of Engineers also issued a permit for the rip -rap.
A Flood Control District permit is not required.
Construction of the sand and cement bag rip -rap can be accomplished
by the department's Operations Division, however a resolution by
the City Commission allocating three thousand dollar.s($3,000.00)
is needed for the purchase of materials, The funds for this project
could be made available from the Capital Improvement Fund - Unallo-
cated Funds. If this meets with your approval, we have prepared
the attached resolution for Commission action allocating the neces-
sary funds.
