City Swimming Pool Operations
Agenda Item #51 (b)
7-1-76
Revisions have been made in the 1976-77 budget to enable
us to keep the eight City swimming pools open to the
public for eleven months per year instead of the recently
proposed nine months. A prime factor in arriving at this
decision was the lack of response for temporary part-time
lifeguards. Since the eight full-time guards are to be
retained, the saving in swimming pool operations by closing
three months and using part-time employees will not be
realized.
Provisions also have been made in the budget to retain the
full-time cashier positions at this time. The Department
of Parks and Recreation is, however, exploring the possi-
bility of installing coin -operated turnstyles at the entrance
to the pools as a means of collecting the daily general ad-
missions. If turnstyles prove to be feasible, the need for
full-time cashiers will be given reconsideration. In the
interim, as cashier positions become vacant through promotion,
retirement or resignation, part-time personnel will be em-
ployed to perform the cashier duties.
In light of the foregoing, we do not propose any immediate
change in the existing swimming pool opening schedules;
therefore a public hearing on this matter will not be
necessary.
