(305) 644-5377 SOLAR HEATING FOR SWIMMING POOLS October 1975 trn a ! r, P- ---t f }(tot The general rule of thumb for determing the number of `colleCtcris required to heat your swimming pool is to provide a total collector area equivalent to the area of the pool surface for each l0 degrees F. increment of temperature rise desired. Due to the number of collectors required to heat a sizeable pool, we do not recommend using the collector designs given in our booklet, "How to Build a Solar. Water Heater," as the cost would be prohibitive, and recent information indicates that clor.inated water at the concentrations required for swimming (including the intermitant periods of very high clorine concentrations due to "shocking" for algae removal) will react with copper or galvanized metal to form harmful toxic materials. For these reasons we recommend fabrication of an absorber using inert, less expensive, materials such as plastic pipe and polyethylene sheet plastic. The existing circulation pump is satisfactory for providing adequate: flow through the absorber. The absorber is fabricated by fastening a sheet of black polyethylene plastic aloncr the crest of the roof and spanning to the roof edge* at the eaves. The width required to give the proper area for the plastic sheet should be determined by the "rule of thumb" described in the first pe:•:agraph above. A one by two inch wood strip is fastened along the top of the p1astio sheet at the roof crest. Plastic pipe** is run from the filter pump to the roof crest and run along the plastic sheet adjacent to the one by two inch wood strip to which it is fastened. The end of t-hL plastic pipe is plugged and one -eighth inch diameter holes are mice in the plastic pipe spaced one-half inch apart along the length cf pipe required to span the top of the plastic sheet. Another. one by two inch wood strip is notched on the two-inch face with one -eighth inch grooves spaced one-half inch apart along the bottom length equal to the width of the plastic sheet. The notched strip is fastened along the bottom of the plastic :beet with the notches against the plastic sheet Cnotches down). One by Lwo inch wood strips are also fastened along each side cf the plastic sheet. A sheet of clear polyethylene plastic sheet is stretched over the black polyethylene plastic sheet and fastened to the woad strips*. A three itch diameters plastic pipe is slotted with a one-half inch slot for a length equal to the width of the plastic sheets and then the remaining un-slotted pipe is routed to the pool where the solar heated water is returned. *Be sure and allow sufficient extra length on the polyethylene plastic sheets to fit into collector pipe. (see diagram) f <0 pipe is dependant on pool plumbing details. ''' i' '' 111191IIIIAIIII 35 3‘3,(94.
