Pentagon announces first 3 U.S. deaths in war with Iran

w Three U.S. service
embers have been killed
in action and five have
been seriously wounded,
the Pentagon said in an-
nouncing the fist U.S.
troops to die in President
Donald Tramp's war with
Iran.
U.S. Central Command
did not say where the
troops were killed. Two
military officials said that
an Army base housing U.S.
troops in Kuwait was one
of the many U.S. bases in
the region that had been
hit in retaliatory Iranian
strikes.

Central Command said in
dal media post Sun-
day.
While Central Com-
mand did not confute the
location of the troops
killed and injured, the
involvement of shrapnel
could imply that the in-
juries were the result of an
Iranian spike.
Since the joint U.S. and
Israel military strikes
began Saturday morning,
Iran has launched hun-
dreds of retaliatory mis-
siles at a wide range of
U.S. and Israeli targets in
the region, as well as at
Arab countries it considers
allies of the United States.
10 the past, Lan has given
warning before launching
retaliatory spikes on bases
housing U.S. troops.
En announcing the start
of the war in Iran early
Saturday morning, Trump
said that the campaign
could result in American
deaths. Gen. Dan Caine,
the chair of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, had cau-
tioned Trump in recent
private meetings that U.S.
troops could be killed or
injured.
The Pentagon had
moved some troops in the
region to different loca-
tions in advance of Sat-
urday's attacks.
"My administration has
taken every possible step
to minimize the risk to
U.S. personnel in the re-
gion," Trump said Sat-
urday.

On social media and in
public remarks, Trump has
indulged, with increasing
frequency, debunked
theories about how the
2020 election was stolen.
Now those words are
sometimes accompanied
by government action.
His warning in January

from the 2020 election

have ruled against some of
his past efforts. At the
direction of the White

officials are intensifying
efforts to investigate vot-
ing by noncitizens.
Control of Congress
hangs in the balance this
fall, and Trump has
warned that he will be
impeached for a thud time
if Democrats regain con-
trol of the House.
The White Mouse is
pushing every lever to
hold power, especially in
the Mouse. Last year, that
included Trump's unusual
drive for Republican -

that the Justice Depart-

recent interview.
Jeffries said he had been

fettered ability to deploy
National Guard troops,
calling that"the biggest
tool that an authoritarian -
type leader would have."
En 2020, Trump had
considered using the Na-
tional Guard to seize vot-
ing machines. Looking
back, he told The New
York Tines in January,
"Well, I should have."
Behind the scenes,
Democratic state attor-

legal documents to head

as removing armed forces

in a ant interview with

be deployed differently.

"is that next is they're
going to bring them out

Abigail Jackson, a White

"committed to ensuring
that Americans have full

"No one should take this
Democrat pearl -clutching

spent years undermining
and denying the results of
free and fan elections —
including the election of
President Trump," she said,
adding that Trump was
simply committed to "to-

and unlawfully regis-

ELECTION -SKEPTICAL
TRUMP ALLIES
Whatever guardrails
existed around Trump
during his fast term ap-
pear frayed or absent He
is now largely surrounded
by pliant advisers and
party officials.
It turned out that it was
a Trump appointee, (Curt
Olsen, who had set off the
cent Georgia investiga-
tion that resulted in the
FBI raid in Fulton County,
according to a recently
unsealed search wan ant.
And Trump's director of
national intelligence, Tulsi
Gabbard, was unexpected-
ly at the scene. She con-
nected him on the call
with the agents.
Steve Simon, the Demo-
cratic secretary of state in
Minnesota, called the
federal actions "largely
sloppy, unreliable, even
menacing." The Trump
administration recently
and explicitly linked a
demand for sensitive voter
information in the state
with the restoration of law
and order.
"I never thought in the
year 2026, I would be
year
that the federal
government is an impedi-
ment right now to smooth
elections, and not an ally,"
Simon said.
Some right-wing activ-
ists who fanned the con-
spiatonal flames of fraud
in 2020 are no longer
outside agitators. Instead,
they occupy powerful
seats inside the federal
government.
They include FBI Direc-
tor Kash Patel, who was a
prominent promoter of the
conspiracy theory that the
not at the Capitol on Jan.
6, 2021, was planned and
instigated by the FBI;
Attorney General Pam
Bondi, who traveled in
2020 to Pennsylvania,
where she claimed to have
evidence of cheating"
that never fully matenal-
ized in court; and Hanneet
Dhillon, who was a leader
of a Trump lawyers coali-
tion in 2020 and is now
he assistant attorney
general for civil rights.
Olsen went from ad -
sing Trump privately in
the run-up to Jan. 6 to
being named Trump's
director of "election secu-
ity and integrity." Others
ue bureowed deeper in
he bureaucracy.
On Capitol lint,
Trump's congressional
allies are planning a series
of votes on legislation to
impose stricter voting
requirements. The mea-
sures
not expected to
become law, but they
amplify the false accusa-
tions about widespread
fraud.
Democrats have little
faith in Johnson to stand
up to Trump. En 2020,
Johnson, then a low -pro-
file lawmaker from Loui-
sa, played apivotal role
in justifying Trump's false
claims of widespread
fraud.
En February, Johnson
as talking conspnatonai
ly in the Capitol about
California's standard but
unusually long process of
postelection ballot count-
ing. The leads of Repub-
lican candidates, he
claimed, had "just mag-
ically whittled away."
"It looks on its face to
be fraudulent," Johnson
said. "Can I prove that?
Democrats hope the
ousts can prevent some
overreach by the Trump
administration. A sweeping
executive order by Trump
on election rules last year
has largely been blocked by
federal judges, including
oin lanoauy who ex -
plane ined his reasoning suc-

wrote, "assigns no author-
ity to the president over

tration"

been seriously wounded,
the Pentagon said in an-

troops to die in President
Donald Tramp's war with
Iran.
U.S. Central Command
did not say where the
troops were killed. Two
military officials said that
an Army base housing U.S.
troops in Kuwait was one
of the many U.S. bases in
the region that had been

While Central Com-

location of the troops
killed and injured, the
involvement of shrapnel
could imply that the in-
juries were the result of an
Iranian spike.
Since the joint U.S. and
Israel military strikes
began Saturday morning,
Iran has launched hun-
dreds of retaliatory mis-
siles at a wide range of
U.S. and Israeli targets in
the region, as well as at
Arab countries it considers
allies of the United States.

warning before launching
retaliatory spikes on bases
housing U.S. troops.
En announcing the start
of the war in Iran early
Saturday morning, Trump
said that the campaign
could result in American
deaths. Gen. Dan Caine,
the chair of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, had cau-
tioned Trump in recent
private meetings that U.S.
troops could be killed or
injured.
The Pentagon had
moved some troops in the
region to different loca-

to minimize the risk to
U.S. personnel in the re-

On social media and in

The White Mouse is
pushing every lever to

ELECTION -SKEPTICAL
TRUMP ALLIES
Whatever guardrails
existed around Trump
during his fast term ap-
pear frayed or absent He
is now largely surrounded
by pliant advisers and
party officials.
It turned out that it was
a Trump appointee, (Curt
Olsen, who had set off the
cent Georgia investiga-
tion that resulted in the
FBI raid in Fulton County,
according to a recently
unsealed search wan ant.
And Trump's director of
national intelligence, Tulsi
Gabbard, was unexpected-
ly at the scene. She con-
nected him on the call
with the agents.
Steve Simon, the Demo-
cratic secretary of state in
Minnesota, called the
federal actions "largely
sloppy, unreliable, even
menacing." The Trump
administration recently
and explicitly linked a
demand for sensitive voter
information in the state
with the restoration of law
and order.
"I never thought in the
year 2026, I would be
year
that the federal
government is an impedi-
ment right now to smooth
elections, and not an ally,"
Simon said.
Some right-wing activ-
ists who fanned the con-
spiatonal flames of fraud
in 2020 are no longer
outside agitators. Instead,
they occupy powerful
seats inside the federal
government.
They include FBI Direc-
tor Kash Patel, who was a
prominent promoter of the
conspiracy theory that the
not at the Capitol on Jan.
6, 2021, was planned and
instigated by the FBI;
Attorney General Pam
Bondi, who traveled in
2020 to Pennsylvania,
where she claimed to have

that never fully matenal-
ized in court; and Hanneet
Dhillon, who was a leader
of a Trump lawyers coali-
tion in 2020 and is now
he assistant attorney
general for civil rights.
Olsen went from ad -
sing Trump privately in
the run-up to Jan. 6 to
being named Trump's
director of "election secu-
ity and integrity." Others
ue bureowed deeper in
he bureaucracy.
On Capitol lint,
Trump's congressional
allies are planning a series
of votes on legislation to
impose stricter voting
requirements. The mea-
sures
not expected to
become law, but they
amplify the false accusa-
tions about widespread
fraud.
Democrats have little
faith in Johnson to stand
up to Trump. En 2020,
Johnson, then a low -pro-
file lawmaker from Loui-
sa, played apivotal role
in justifying Trump's false
claims of widespread
fraud.
En February, Johnson

California's standard but

ing. The leads of Repub-
lican candidates, he
claimed, had "just mag-

"It looks on its face to
be fraudulent," Johnson
said. "Can I prove that?
Democrats hope the
ousts can prevent some
overreach by the Trump
administration. A sweeping
executive order by Trump
on election rules last year
has largely been blocked by
federal judges, including
