COMMISSION
MINUTES
OF MEETING HELD ON February 12, 1976
(SPECIAL MEETING)
PREPARED BY THE OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK
CITY HALL
SPECIAL CITY COMMISSION MERTI O
FERRUARY 12, 1976
Mayor Ferret That the City of Miami, and the citizens of
Miami, even though there has been tremendous response from
the Latin community and the rest of the community in the
Guatemalan tragedy, perhaps we should try to do a little bit
more, since the death toll is now up to twenty thousand, and I
understand the conditions are just unbeiieveable, and they are
continuing to have earthquakes; so the recommendation of Dr.
Resasso is: One, that the City appropriate one thousand dollars
for the following purposes: That we request the Dade County
Auditorium, since parking is easier and it is more accessable,
and a larger hall, and try to get a twenty -four-hour marathon,
and get Channel 2 to cooperate, and the other local radio
stations in both English and Spanish, and get the show business
people, of which we have so many in this community, and show
business people usually are very great in participating in
these types of things --and of course we have Jackie Gleason
and so on --and try to get some kind of an impact to have a
marathon to see if the local community would respond in the
same way that it responds to so many telethons that are so
successful in our city.
Mr. Plummer: What would the thousand dollars be used for?
Mayor Ferro: The thousand dollars would be used for ex-
penditures, to be decided by the City Manager's office, in
promoting the event, and whatever telephone calls, advertising,
mailing and other requirements; hopefully, if it doesn't get
up to that, it wouldn't exceed it, but at least we will have
some seed money to proceed on.
Thereupon the motion was adopted by a unanimous vote (Rev.
Gibson absent) and was designated Motion No. 76-198.
Mr. Plummer: Mr. Crouch, let me recommend something to
you, sir. Last evening --and Mr. Gort can give you all the
information --the CB'rs in this community --and there are thou-
sands of them --held a rally last night, and if you can get
them to participate --and I am sure they would be more than
happy to --it would be a tremendous success from the instant go,
because you have literally thousands of CB'rs in this town
that are talking on those air waves, and they are very inter-
ested in this Guatemalan relief.
Mr. Crouch: It would be my suggestion that we designate
that this money come from the contingency fund, and I will ask
the City Attorney to draw an appropriate resolution indicating
it and bring it to your next meeting and I will take action
on this.
Mr. Plummer: You can take action tomorrow.
Mr. Crouch: Yes; and I would also suggest that maybe a
resolution by the Commission requesting the assistance of
Metro in the use of the Dade County Auditorium.
Mr. Plummer; You mean waiving the rental.
Mr. Crouch:. Yes.
Mr, Plummer': I incorporate those two ideas in the motion.
