A committee of businessmen, headed by Chairman Ken Clifford and Emilio Calleja, met with us recently to ask the City to contribute $10,000 to co-sponsor the project. Mr. Clifford has stated the total cost of purchasing the decorations, which are expected to last for several years, will total approxi- mately S40,O0O. The major portion of funds will come from the merchants in the downtown area and from the Orange Bowl Committee. Plans call for decorating Flagler Street from Biscayne Boulevard to the Courthouse, NE First Street and SE First Street in the same manner. The City of Miami has assisted generously the merchants with this type of project in the past. IIowever, because of the Flagler Street innovations, particularly with the newly installed modern street identification signs, it has become necessary to create decorations that would be more tailored to the street improvements. Since our Tourism Director, Lew Price, believes this holiday project would lend itself to additional promotional purposes, I recommend that the request be granted. Funding will come from the current Department of Publicity and Tourism budget.
