THE IIONORABLF LAWTON CHILES FOR HIS SUC-
CESSFUL EFFORTS AS A MEMBER OF U.S. SENATE
APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE IN MAINTAINING THE
PROPOSED FULL FUNDING LEVEL OF THE CUBAN
REFUGEE PROGRAM OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELFARE.
RED, Cuban Refugee Assistance Program of
Department of Health, Education and Welfare was estab-
in 1961 to assist Cuban refugees who left Cuba on or

in the United States and becoming self-supporting members of
society through the provision of financial aid and supportive
medical, rehabilitative and social services; and
WHEREAS, the Program has assisted in excess of 465,000 exiles,
expanding from 4,305 active cases in early 1962 to
approximately 260,500 active cases in the late 60's with a current
active national caseload of 75,000; and
WHF..RFAS, current administrative phase -out plans call for
67 million dollars funding in Fiscal 1973, a figure which was
sought to be reduced by 30 million dollars by some members of
the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee; and
WHEREAS, through the substantial efforts of Florida Senator
LAWTON CHILES, serving as a member on said committTeJ,the.reduction Proposal was defeated; -;--p\
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA;
Section 1. The deepest gratitude and warmest apprication
of the City Commission is hereby extended to the Honorable LAWTON
CHLES for his successful efforts as a member of the U.S. Sentate
