Ferre' Mayor, City of Miami Post Office Box 330708 Miami, Florida 33133 Dear Maurice: l can't describe how dissappointed all of tus i.n`cycling`are that the velodrome contract has been cancelled by Webb Construction. Without doubt, the workings of the city/ county government make us all wonder why we,pay taxes to encourage such lethargy. Quite frankly it's disgusting that cycling, which offers so. much to this tourist oriented community, is treated essen- tially as a non -idea by the commission, the manager, the city attorney, the publicity department, and of course by the county; who at least got to exercise their will over the Community by blocking a legitimate facility for cyclists. We do compose a large segment of this town, and have never been given one thing of value for our tax dollars. Football, Tennis., Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Softball... all have been given useful facilities, but not us. On a personal level I've volunteered my time repeatedly to .the city to help inaugurate a cycling program and have been. given in return, no encouragement. It's amazing considering that 'The Tour of Coconut Grove' and the 'Miami 100' are positively the two best known bicycle races in or outside of -the U.S. All this done without receiving one cent of taxpayers money for support. The past 8 years I have travelled almost • 40,000 miles across the country as an unpaid P.R. man for the city to achieve this end, and at this moment, Miami is consid- ered to be a hotbead of cycling activity throughout the nation. Sadly it is an undeserved reputation that will die if I decide not to promote this area as a cycling center in the future. Given the lack of cooperation, lethargy. or whatever, it will be easy for me to abandon this, and the community then becomes the poorer for it. POST OFFICE .l30X M (305) 445-3495 COCONU GROVE, PL.ORI©A '33133 have begged. pieadedv etjoied3 ranted, raved, and fought for cyeiing and the overwhelmingly positive benefits which aeerue to any area that supports it. it is apparent the ffidiai Miami eommUnity has decided that cycling ,Just can't be ail that worthwhile. This is a tragic mistake. All we have to sell here is cleat air and sunshine; both of which are becoming things of the past as we continue the laissez-faire attitude that now clearly prevails in our governmental thinking Very plainly stated it is time for this goverment to give to the people Who want to use their bicycles, but who are justly afraid of the many traffic hazards, real encouragement in the form of safer places to ride, along with official recognition of the importance to the vitality of this town the bicycle offers. to cities where this is done; none of which are as ideally suited as Miami, the charm, pleasantness, and other obvious benefits are impressive. There are secondary streets throughout this city/county area which should be striped and designated as protected bicycle ways. This technique works and itts inexpensive. If t am to continue in these some tools to work with. liowabout some help? related David 3alkin President
