JOINT USE, SHARED FUTURE
r.(.'I Asa 11
MIAMI IS GROWING FAST -BUT GREEN SPACE ISN'T KEEPING UP. FAMILIES ACROSS THE CITY WANT
MORE PLACES TO WALK, PLAY, AND GATHER. BUT LAND IS LIMITED, AND NEW PARKS ARE EXPENSIVE
AND SLOW TO BUILD, AND THERE IS A SOLUTION:
COMMISSIONER IS CHAMPIONING A CITYWIDE STRATEGY CALLED THE S.H.A.R.E. INITIATIVE:
JOINT USE AGREEMENTS (JUAS) WITH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THESE AGREEMENTS
OPEN SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS, FIELDS, AND COURTS TO THE PUBLIC AFTER SCHOOL, ON WEEKENDS,
AND DURING SUMMERS.
DISTRICT 4 HAS THE LEAST AMOUNT OF GREEN SPACE IN THE CITY. SCHOOLS HAVE THE LAND BUT
LACK RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN IT.
• THE CITY HAS FUNDING BUT NOT ENOUGH SPACE.
• M-DCPS HAS THE SPACE AND NEEDS THE SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN IT.
JUAS BRIDGE THAT GAP -UNLOCKING EXISTING SCHOOL GROUNDS IN THE HEART OF OUR
NEIGHBORHOODS.
THANKS TO COMMISSIONER INTIATIVE, THAT VISION IS BECOMING A REALITY, RIGHT NOW.
SWIPE TO SEE THE DISTRICT 4 SCHOOLS THAT COULD BECOME ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THIS
INITIATIVE:

DISTRICT PLAN, CITY SOLUTION
DISTRICT 4 HAS LONG BEEN UNDERSERVED WHEN IT COMES TO GREEN SPACE.
WE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS TO GO WITHOUT THIS ASSET. THAT CHALLENGE BECAME THE CATALYST
FOR SOMETHING BIGGER -A SMARTER, FASTER, CITYWIDE APPROACH TO PUBLIC ACCESS.
WHAT STARTED AS A LOCAL PUSH HAS BECOME A MODEL FOR ALL OF MIAMI: EXPAND JOINT USE
AGREEMENTS, UNLOCK SCHOOL CAMPUSES, AND TURN UNDERUSED LAND INTO VIBRANT
COMMUNITY SPACE.
THIS IS C.A.S.A. IN MOTION
• SHARED SPACES WHERE NEIGHBORS GATHER

• STRONGER SCHOOL -CITY PARTNERSHIPS

EDUCATION
Schools play an integral role in the life of a city, and intersect with parks in fundamental ways,
particularly with regard to youth programming. Nationwide, school land is increasingly being
explored for its potential for recreation space, especially in dense urban areas like Miami
where land is at a premium.

GROW ACCESS LEVEL OF SERVICE
Ensuring that every Miami resident can access a park within a 10-minute walk is primary goal
established by the Department. 10-minute park access has become a standard of livability
for cities across the country, spearheaded by the Trust for Public Land's campaign. Currently,
77% of residents are served citywide, although the percentage is not equal across the districts.
Districts 3 and 5 have the best access (87%), while District 4 is significantly underserved (58%).
