WHEREAS, Lee Corso was born in Cicero, Illinois on August 7, 1935 to Italian immigrant parents; and WHEREAS, at age 10, Lee Corso moved with his family to the Allapatah neighborhood, leading to him attending Miami Jackson High School, where he was a three -sport athlete and All -City in football, baseball and basketball; and WHEREAS, in the 1950's, Miami Jackson High School, Miami Edison Senior High School, and Miami Senior High School played their home games at the legendary Orange Bowl and in 1951, Lee Corso as a backup quarterback and defensive back for the Jackson Generals defeated the Stingarees, which was his first of many defining moments in the Orange Bowl and in his career as a competitor and leader; and WHEREAS, Lee Corso as shortstop prospect was offered a signing bonus with the Brooklyn Dodgers but he chose to attend Florida State University, playing both football and baseball, while earning a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1957 and a master's degree in administration and supervision in 1958; and WHEREAS, after college, Lee Corso became the quarterbacks coach at the University of Maryland and in 1962, he convinced an academically and athletically qualified black player to transfer from the Naval Academy, making him the first African -American football player in the Atlantic Coast Conference; and WHEREAS, Lee Corso went on to become the head coach at the University of Louisville (1969 to1972), Indiana University (1973 to 1982), Northern Illinois University (1984) and in the USFL for the Orlando Renegades in 1985; and WHEREAS, in 1987, Lee Corso began his broadcasting career as an analyst for ESPN for its Saturday College GameDay program, quickly becoming the signature voice of the program and in 1993 the now -iconic headgear pick originated, where he famously began the tradition of putting on the head of the mascot of the team he picked to win; and WHEREAS, Saturday College GameDay has broadcasted from South Florida numerous times, including for the Capital One Orange Bowl game, and Lee Corso's spirited personality elevated the profile of not only the Orange Bowl game but the City; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his impact on college football and sport's media, Lee Corso received the Orange Bowl Committee's Edwin Pope Vanguard Media Award in 2012 and was inducted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame in 2023; and WHEREAS, on August 30, 2025, Lee Corso made his final broadcasting appearance and his final headgear selection, ending his College GameDay tenure with a record of 287-144 all-time in headgear picks; and WHEREAS, Lee Corso attended the Boys' Club of Miami, learning how influential caring adults can be in the lives of children and in 2013 he was inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Lee Corso supports several charities, such as Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer, where he serves an honorary chairman and national spokesperson, the Positive Coaching Alliance, which runs the Lee Corso Legacy Fund to promote positive youth sports development, and the Lee Corso Excellence Fund, which funds student -athlete scholarships; and WHEREAS, from his beginnings as a Miami Jackson General to his beloved role on Saturday College GameDay, Lee Corso has remained one of the most influential ambassadors for the City and the Orange Bowl, and this decades -long connection to South Florida helped shape the Orange Bowl's modern media era, solidifying his place as a culture icon of college football; and WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 14317, adopted on September 26, 2024, provides that the restrictions related to street co -designations, including the restriction on renaming named streets, contained in Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code"), may be waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commissioners, or an unanimous vote of the quorum that exists because of either abstentions or vacancies resulting from resignation, death, suspension, or physical incapacitation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby co -designates Northwest 38th Street from Northwest 17th Avenue to Northwest 15th Avenue in honor of his impact on young athletes and on the community. Section 3. The City Manager is directed to take all necessary steps to effectuate this co - designation, including the installation of appropriate signage. Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 5. If any section, clause, or provision of this resolution is declared invalid, the remainder shall not be affected and shall remain in full force and effect. Section 6.
