Requesting Department: Department of Fire -
Rescue
Sponsored By:
District Impacted: All
Type: Resolution
Subject: Authorize Amendment - Fire Rescue Table of Organization - Lieutenant Positions
Purpose of Item:
A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING AN
AMENDMENT TO THE TABLE OF ORGANIZATION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF
FIRE -RESCUE RECLASSIFYING FOUR (4) FIREFIGHTER POSITIONS TO FOUR (4)
FIRE LIEUTENANT POSITIONS. THIS ACTION PROVIDES THE SUPERVISORY
STAFFING REQUIRED TO PLACE A NEW GRANT FUNDED AERIAL COMPANY
INTO SERVICE ; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ALL NECESSARY
ACTIONS TO IMPLEMENT THE PROVISIONS OF THIS RESOLUTION AND AMEND
THE APPROVED TABLE OF ORGANIZATION AS REQUIRED, IN FORMS
ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY ATTORNEY.
Background of Item:
The Department of Fire -Rescue provides citywide emergency medical services, fire
suppression, rescue operations, and public safety functions. The Department was
awarded grant funding to hire eighteen (18) Firefighters for the purpose of staffing a
new aerial company intended to enhance service and improve emergency response
capabilities in the Flagami neighborhood. Although the grant funds only firefighter -level
positions, a functional aerial company requires both Firefighters and Fire Officers to
operate safely and in accordance with industry and departmental standards. The
proposed reclassification fills this operational gap without creating additional full-time
equivalent positions. This reclassification has minimal fiscal impact because it converts
existing positions rather than adding new ones.
