I MIAMI HERALD
Miami Beach commissioner's
brother-in-law arrested
after sign -stealing claim
BY aldbeoil0z@miamiheraldmm
The brother-in-law of a
Miami Beach city com-
missioner was arrested
for driving an unregis-
tered golf cart that be-
longed to the commis-
sioner after allegedly
taking part in an effort to
remove campaign signs
on Election Day.
Dennis
Collazo,
Jr.,
r28,
hose
sister is
married to
Commis-
sioner
David
Suarez,
was
charged around 2 a.m.
Tuesday with operating
an unregistered vehicle
on a public roadway,
according to a police
report.
Miami Beach police
said they reviewed video
that showed someone
"tossing a campaign sign
over a gate" before en-
tering a black car that
drove away. That vehi-
cle, the report says, "was
later determined to be
driven by Commissioner
David Suarez."
Police also said they
reviewed video of Colla-
zo "removing a
cam-
paign sign for Commis-
sioner [Laura] Dom-
inguez and replacing it
with one for Fred Karl -
ton."
The Miami Herald
reviewed that footage,
David
Suarez
which shows a man ap-
pearing to remove a
Dominguez campaign
sign from an area next to
the sidewalk at Abbott
Avenue and 72nd Street,
then tossing it aside
before putting up a sign
for Karlton, Dominguez's
opponent in the Group II
race.
Moments later, the
video shows a second
man pulling up in a golf
cart and picking up the
first man before driving
away.
The footage was cap-
tured by an aide to Dom-
inguez, Julien Desrois,
according to the police
report. The recording
begins from inside a car
across the street before
Desrois gets out of the
car and walks toward the
two men before they
drove away in the golf
cart, which was full of
Karlton signs.
According to the re-
port, Desrois was leaving
a gym when he noticed
people "removing cam-
paign signs and tossing
them around." He called
police and spoke to offi-
cers as he followed the
group south on Collins
Avenue. Police pulled
over the golf cart on
Collins near 45th Street,
the report says.
Collazo told police that
he and the other man
"were only putting up
campaign signs" and that
the two of them "work
for Mr. Suarez." He told
officers Suarez was his
brother-in-law and was
"also assisting them."
Police spoke to Suarez,
who confirmed the golf
cart was his, according to
the report It wasn't clear
from the report whether
Suarez also confirmed to
police that he was driv-
ing the black car.
While there is no spe-
cific law in Florida about
stealing campaign signs,
doing so can trigger
charges of theft. Officers
chose not to charge Col-
lazo with theft because
"there is no victim," the
report says.
Collazo was taken to
the Miami Beach Police
Department and issued a
promise to appear in
court before being re-
leased.
Collazo could not im-
mediately be reached for
comments Tuesday af-
ternoon.
Suarez declined to
comment.
Desrois did not re-
spond to a request for
comments.
Dominguez defeated
Karlton. They both de-
clined to comment
Suarez, who was elect-
ed to the Miami Beach
City Commission in 2023
and was not on Tuesday,
was heavily involved in
trying to unseat Dom-
inguez and get Karlton
elected.
Suarez has invested his
own money into the ef-
fort, running sponsored
posts on social media
slamming Dominguez's
record and donating
$25,000 to a political
committee supporting
Karlton's campaign.
Miami Beach incumbents
hold their commission seats
while one race heads to runoff
TV AARONUMBOWIT.
aleibanntz@miamiheraldcom
Miami Beach Commis-
sioners Laura Domin-
guez and Alex Fernandez
withstood challenges to
maintain their seats
while a third commission
race with no incumbent
is heading to a runoff.
Dominguez won with
61% of the vote on Tues-
day in the Group II race,
defeating Fred Karlton
after a fierce campaign
to try to unseat her.
Fernandez won easily
against Luidgi Mary in
Group III with 84% of
the vote.
The Group I race is
headed to a Dec. 9 run-
off between Monica Mat-
teo-Salinas and Monique
Pardo Pope. Matteo-
Salinas finished first
among six candidates at
23%, while Pardo Pope
was second with 20%.
Matteo-Salinas, 46, is
a former legislative aide
to Fernandez and Com-
missioner Kristen Rosen
Gonzalez, who was term -
limited in the Group I
seat and lost Tuesday's
mayoral race to incum-
bent Steven Meiner.
Matteo-Salinas works in
the city's fleet depart-
ment and has said she
will resign from that role
if elected.
Pardo Pope, 44, is a
lawyer who serves as
vice president of the
Women's Cancer Associ-
ation of the University of
Miami.
While the race is non-
partisan, backers of both
candidates have empha-
sized their political lean-
ings in campaign messa-
ging. Matteo-Salinas is a
registered Democrat.
Pardo Pope is a regis-
tered Republican.
Pardo Pope is advanc-
ing to the runoff despite
recent headlines about
her past social -media
pasts in which she re-
ferred to her late father,
convicted serial killer
Manuel Pardo, as her
"hero."
In a statement posted
to Instagram in Septem-
ber, Pardo Pope wrote
that she was "confident
that voters will look past
the sins of my father and
understand that I too am
a victim in this."
"I did not get here
easily. I went through a
long period of anger and
bitterness, straggling to
understand how the man
I loved could commit
such a crime," Pardo
Pope wrote. "I realized
that holding onto that
anger would only destroy
me; it would make me
another statistic. I had to
make a conscious deci-
sion, between myself and
God, to forgive him."
The race between
Dominguez and Karlton
was the nastiest in this
year's election cycle in
Miami Beach.
Karlton had support
from Miami Beach Com-
missioner David Suarez
as he hammered Dom-
inguez on her record,
particularly as it related
to support for devel-
opment projects.
Dominguez was elect-
ed to the City Commis-
sion in 2022 to succeed
her life partner, Mark
Samuelian, after Samue-
lien's death.
On Tuesday morning,
Suarez's brother-in-law
was arrested for driving
an unregistered golf cart
belonging to Suarez.
Video showed the broth-
er-in-law allegedly tak-
ing part in an effort to
remove Dominguez cam-
paign signs and replace
them with signs for Karl -
ton.

STEVEN MEINER
gress in 2018 and was
narrowly defeated by
Meiner in a 2019 runoff
for City Commission.
She was term -limited as
a commissioner this year.
Meiner and Rosen Gon-
zalez emphasized similar
priorities on the campaign
trail. Both said the city
needs to do mom to alle-
viate traffic and prevent
overdevelopment
Both supported a crack-
down on outdoor sleeping
that has led to hundreds
of arrests of homeless
people. Both are support-
ers of Israel.
While the race was
officially nonpartisan,
supporters of Rosen Gon-
zalez, a registered Demo-
crat, sought to paint
Meiner as a conservative
in liberal -leaning Miami
Beach.
Democratic Party mail-
ers spotlighted Meiner's
controversial attempt to
evict 0 Cinema for
screening a documentary
about the West Bank, a
move that made interna-
tional headlines, as well
as his lack of public oppo-
sition to the state's recent
removal of a rainbow
crosswalk on Ocean
Drive.
They also resurfaced a
Miami Herald report
published shortly before
Meiner was elected as
mayor in 2023. The arti-
cle was about three of his
former colleagues at the
U.S. Securities and Ex-
change Commission ac-
cusing him of making
unwanted sexual ad-
vances, allegations that he
denied.
A Range Rover hit a boat that was being towed on US. 1 in Islamorada on Tuesday.
Wild FHP chase in Keys ends with speeding
Range Rover crashing into boat, police say
dgoodhue@miamiherald.com
A driver fleeing from the
Florida Highway Patrol
going at more than 100
mph cashed his Range
Rover into a boat being
transported on U.S. 1 in
the Florida Keys after
troopers forced him off the
road, according to the
Monroe County Sheriff's
Office.
The chaos began shortly
around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday
with a sheriff's office dep-
uty pulling over the Range
Rover near mile marker
101.4 in Key Largo after it
almost sideswiped her
patrol car, according to her
report.
The driver, 23-year-old
Christopher Brinkley
Smithers, was "fidgety and
restless" and "struggled to
form coherent sentences"
when the deputy spoke
with him, her report states.
As another deputy to test
Smithers' sobriety, he sped
off, the report states.
That's when FHP troop-
ers took over the pursuit.
Smithers, from Great
Falls, Virginia, traveled
about 14 miles south on
U.S. 1 to Founders Park in
Islamorada, according to
photos and videos provid-
ed to the Miami Herald.
Troopers said in their
report that Smithers at
times was driving faster
than 122 mph along a
mute where speed limits
range from 45 to 55 mph.
Video shot by a witness
named Wes Wilson and
posted on Facebook
showed the black Range
Rover speeding down the
middle of U.S. 1 in the
median separating north
and southbound traffic,
followed by two FHP cars.
The troopers pinned the
Range Rover in with their
cruisers, but Smithers
managed to make a left
onto Old Highway, which
runs parallel to U.S. 1 in
Islamorada, and then tried
heading north.
Troopers rammed their
cars into him again before
he drove the SUV over the
grassy shoulder and back
onto the southbound lanes
of U.S. 1. Troopers then
forced him off the road
with their cars, and he
crashed into the twin -
engine center -console
boat, which was being
pulled by a pickup truck in
the southbound lanes of
U.S. 1.
Moments before troop-
ers made contact with
Smithers, he tumed into
Founders Park, which
contains ball fields, play-
grounds and other facil-
ities used by children,
according to FHP's report.
When he came upon
locked gates, he tumed
around to drive out of the
park and crashed into the
guardhouse, knocking off
the SUV's right front tire,
the report states.
After Smithers crashed
into the boat, troopers
ordered him out of the
Range Rover at gunpoint
According to troopers,
he told paramedics he
took 80 milligrams of the
ADHD medication Adder -
all, which is a powerful
stimulant when abused.
He told troopers the same
after they read him his
rights, according to the
report. According to Cali-
fomia Detox, a drug and
alcohol rehabilitation
enter, the standard dose
of Adderall to treat ADHD
is between 5 and 40 mil-
ligrams a day.
A breath test given to
him by troopers came up
negative for alcohol, ac-
cording to the report. He
submitted a urine test to
check for other drugs, the
report states. Results were
pending.
As of early Wednesday,
Smithers was being held
on two felony counts of
fleeing and eluding police,
felony dreg possession,
driving under the influ-
ence, speeding, reckless
driving and leaving the
scene of a crash that
aused property damage.
A judge had not set a
bond.
