A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO
OBJECTION AND SUPPORTING THE PLACEMENT OF A PLAQUE
HONORING "THE PILLAR OF HISTORY" INCLUDING THE "TEQUESTA
FAMILY" SCULPTURE LOCATED ON THE BRICKELL AVENUE BRIDGE,
MIAMI, FLORIDA; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A
CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, the implementation of a bronze plaque is being sought to honor the
"Tequesta Family" sculpture, which is part of a larger monument known as the "The Pillar of
History" located on the Brickell Avenue Bridge, Miami, Florida ("Plaque Location"); and
WHEREAS, in 1995, the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") commissioned
Cuban artist Manuel Carbonell to create the 53-foot bronze monument, consisting of the 36-foot
carved bas-relief column known as the "Pillar of History," which depicts graphically the lives of
the Tequesta Indians, who first inhabited Miami, at the top stands a 17-foot bronze sculpture
known as the "Tequesta Family," which is a Tequesta Indian warrior with his wife and child, and
WHEREAS, this monument was the first FDOT initiative to incorporate art into a bridge
design; and
WHEREAS, the plaque will describe the meaning of the "Tequesta Family" sculpture,
which depicts a Tequesta Indian, aiming an arrow into the sky searching for their place in the
future, his wife is expectingly looking up to the same space in the sky as she cradles their son,
who covers his eyes to not face their imminent extinction; and
WHEREAS, the plaque shall commemorate the sculpture, the sculptor and provide
context to the residents and visitors to the City that go across the Brickell Avenue Bridge daily;
and
WHEREAS, the City Commission declares no objection and supports the placement of
this plaque at the Plaque Location;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission declares no objection and supports placement of a
bronze plaque and the script as summarized herein at the Plaque Location.

Section 3. The City Manager is authorized' to negotiate and execute any and all
necessary documents, all in forms acceptable to the City Attorney, to effectuate the purpose of
this Resolution.
Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Florida Department of Transportation, District Six.
Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.

imposed, including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and City Code
provisions.
